Today’s WEP are running an article quoting WAFC, that because of engineering works they are advising fans not to use trains to travel to and from Wembley.
Before we decided to concentrate on just coaches, we looked into chartering our own train and contacted National Train Charter Ltd.
I had been chasing them for over a week to try and get a costing but they kept telling me their delay in replying to me was because of engineering scheduling and planning over that weekend.
This morning I recieved an email from them which I have copied.
Thank you for your enquiry, I am sorry for not replying sooner.
I am afraid that due to the train being on a Saturday and the late kick-off time it is impossible to get the passengers back to Wigan due to NR engineering works. Therefore on this occasion we will not be in a position to offer you a service.
If we can be of assistance in the future please do not hesitate to contact us.

Last I heard the club were still considering a train charter using Virgin – and there are no engineering works issues.
If they are still doing it, they need to get it out sooner rather than later or they’ll miss the boat (or train) in a massive way.[/quote]

I don’t see how this can be the case though. If Riviera can’t offer a charter service, surely no other company can?
I just emailed Riviera to ask if this is the case. I can’t think of anyone else to ask. I await their response.
I must say the WEP has been a complete waste of space during this time. Amateur journalism at best.
They claim a meeting took place between Virgin/FA about trains but I received a response from Virgin on the day the match date was confirmed and they said there would be no additional services.

Fiction or what from the WEP?
After further digging: what Haker is reporting is correct.
Because of the late kick-off time, trains trying to depart after the game would fall foul of engineering works on the mainline.
The club’s planned train was cancelled a couple of days ago due to the engineering works, and they’ll now be operating coaches in lieu of this.
Virgin have been meeting with the FA, and are prepared to issue a press release declaring as much.
In essence, they’re putting the ball squarely in the court of the FA who are making it difficult for fans who have travelled 200 miles to get home by train after the game due to the kick-off time.
The train that has been advertised on the internet for £50 will not be using the mainline, and can best be described as a diesel powered Hogwart’s Express. It has not yet been granted slots and even if it does operate, will do so via the back of beyond and take forever to get there and back.

That private company, are the same ones who took out quite a large back page advert on the back page of the evening post.
The same company that standishwalker warned us that they cancelled the train they planned for Stoke’ trip to Wembley a couple of years ago when they didn’t fill it.
Adding to the email I got from Riviera, I also talked via phone to my original contact at Direct Rail Services(operator), Riviero are agents for DRS, he told me that it is highly unlikely that any train can get back at all, they would need to find a slot at Wembley Station(british rail) and because there are extra services into London on this route because of the game, any ‘special train’ would be difficult to fit in until much later, which would again run into the engineering work closures.
Edit
sorry standish for basically posting the same I started the reply to Jerico64 and went to make a brew, in the meantime you posted the same reasons why they wont run trains, although I didn’t know that about running a train via branch lines, god how long would that take to get back– bringas back memories of the Southampton FA cup trip many years ago.

No worries mate.
Arsenal ran a train for supporters a couple of seasons ago. I think it was for Wigan, but it could have been for Blackpool, anyway, it took about four and a half hours and went via the East Midlands.
Didn’t go down well as they didn’t tell the supporters until they’d got to the station.
19:58 Wembley Central [WMB] Watford Junction [WFJ] 20:28
20:46 Watford Junction [WFJ] Wigan North Western [WGN] 23:04
Check if your ticket is valid.
I know someone who is booked on that train and when he checked this morning (because of what he read on this thread) they told him it WAS running but ALL the trains out of London after 7pm on the West Coast Mainline, are subject to delays and breaks/ transfer to coaches.
Just looking at it that 20:46 train from Watford Jct. must be the last train from Euston at 20:31, it would much easier getting to Watford for 20:46 than getting to Euston for 8:31, there must also be a train earlier service from Wembley central to Watford Jct. than that 19:58 one, easy solution for anyone already pre booked on the train – buy a single from Wembley Central to Watford Junction, you can do that before you travel, as you don’t want to be buying tickets at the station on the day
I have checked with national rail enquiries and there are 7. yes SEVEN trains from Wembley Central to Watford Junction that will make that 20:46 connection – the first is at 7:08 the last being that 19:58 one shown above this.
It’s a 5 min walk from the ground to the station, so if the game ends on 90 mins its a doddle , extra time you need to be away quicker, penalties – well take your running kit.
Standishwalker, douglasbank and especially you haker, thanks for your input on this thread, you have sorted a problem out that has effected quite a few people, it will save quite a few some money on upgrading from their day return tickets to overnight stay ones, if that is possible, or indeed cancelling altogether and finding another mode of transport.
At least now the people prebooked on trains will know the can watch all the game, and even extra time if we need it.
