    1. Victor Moses and Gonohouri(?) in the team
    2. A reliable backup for Kirkland, preferebly an ambitious young Englishman
    3. More youngsters, preferably local lads, knocking on first team door
    4. More purchases of good young talent from lower leagues (e.g Moses, McCarthy, Watson) and fringe players from big teams (e.g Sinclair)
    5. More flexibility from Bobby in playing style, particularly against smaller teams at home
    6. Rodallega down middle
    7. Switching wingers between flanks more regularly in order to work the flanks as well as cutting inside all the time
    8. Wigan fans in the South Stand, taking advantage of the great family offers
    9. Boyce at RB
    10. A cup run
    11. Hard fought draws away from home, particularly after going behind

      1. I agree but they should be made to work for their place, Gohouri and Moses were 2 of our better players against Hull so should both be in contention next season, without a doubt.

      2. Why not sign a keeper who can compete with Kirkland although it looks as though young Smithies is on the radar as a young back-up which will be key as Mike Pollitt can work with him as well as Kirky and the g’keeping coach.

      3. It looks as though our young keeper (Nicholls) is a decent player + we have a few young lads who may make a name for themselves but there’s plenty of young talent to be signed and I think that’s most likely starting with McArthur from Hamilton (was on trial a couple of weeks ago).

      4. As above except the fringe players. We need to sign players who are good enough to get into the 1st team so competition for places is fierce and gives Martinez a headache each week. The young players we sign/bring through can be used as back-up/fringe players until they’re ready.

      5. Disagree. I think we just need better players in various positions to make the system work.

      6. Proved against Hull he’s not always better down the middle but on the whole, he looks more dangerous as a striker although he’s scored quite a few from the left incl. 2 at Burnley.

      7. I strongly agree, this also confuses full backs and offers another dimension to our attacking play.

      8. I think we’ll see more fans in the South due to the offers, hopefully they’re new faces to build on our average attendance.

      9. I would rather a new right back, a full international who can take Mario’s place leaving both himself and Boyce as back-up. This will also provide good competition for places and strength in depth.

      10. Can’t argue, would love a trip the Wembley.

      11. Consistency is the key next season, grinding out wins and draws will be essential and is something I believe Martinez will work on in pre-season.

      12. A decent kit (home and away).

      13. Koumas + others out the door, proved their no good and it’s time to say goodbye.

      14. Hugo, Zog and Figueroa still at Wigan.

I am intrigued. Seriously, how do you work on grinding out a draw in pre-season?

What I meant by that was Martinez will want to work on how his team can keep a lead and win/draw a game when we’ve gone a goal or few down. Maybe pre-season friendlies could be a start? If we have 5 friendlies try and win all 5 or not lose any of the 5, that would be consistency right griff?

Under what circumstances would he actively try to go out to lose a game?

So basically, what you’re saying is he should work on playing better.

Goes back to my point about having no plan B. If you go behind, particularly against the smaller clubs in Prem, they tend to play compact and protect what they have. Our way of playing this season has been too ponderous and not penetrative enough, with the players on the wrong wings funnelling down the middle, making us predictable and easy to defend against. He needs more variety in those circumstances, with the mentality and tactics to grind out results if necessary.

Working on a Plan B or even C is fine, couldn’t agree more.

I’d like to think that working on not losing, ie playimg better, is a bit of a given

“I’d like to think that working on not losing, ie playimg better, is a bit of a given”

By that mentality, Sam Allardyces teams “play better” because they currently don’t lose as much as ours…..I certainly wouldn’t want to watch them.

What I’m saying is that I applaud Martinez’s attempts to play good football, but I think the approach is too predictable at times. He needs to mix it a bit more, in order to get results, particularly when behind. You might call that “playing better” I would call it playing with more variety, some of which might be a bit uglier, or just differently (e.g conventional crosses from wingers on their natural sides).

You’re missing my point. I agree with you about the need to have different styles of play.

My original question aimed at Alex – and I wasn’t being sarky – was how do you work on the training ground at winning/not losing matches? By performing better, in whatever style that might be, you stand more chance or winning/not losing.

        #32347

I think you work on it by having different patterns of play that you can apply in different situations – so if you go behind and the other team is playing in a certain way, you can adapt your style and apply it with confidence

        Next season, let me think.
        Right I’ll settle for a 15lb barbel.
        26lb pike.
        4lb perch.
        2lb 8oz roach.
        9lb bream.
        3lb grayling
        6lb chub and an
        8lb tench.
That’ll be all my PB broken on one season. :D
