Sounded like Diana Ross and the Supremes but I can’t get the damn thing out of my head.
It was also played after the game.

Jackie Wilson.
Hugh, I didn’t say that was the ONLY one they played on the way out, but it was the only one I remember.
I only remember that because we were talking about Dobie Gray and Out on the Floor which they played on the way out of the Bolton game.

I’d guess the one you mean is “The Elgins – Heaven Must Have Sent You”. A Motown classic.
They did play “Dobie Gray – Out On The Floor” and also “Gerri Grainger – I Go To Pieces” but these two weren’t played afterwards.
It’s murder when you get a tune yer head and can’t get the title. Sends me daft, or I think it’s that, that sends me daft anyway. Ha Ha!!
