I was trying to remember a particular home game I went at Springfield Park. It was the last game of that season and we had to win (not sure if by a few goals) and a few teams above us had to lose for us to leapfrog into the play-offs. Loads were on their tiny radios giving a blow by blow account of the other teams as the goals went in. Before the game it was a near impossibility
Can someone fill the spaces for us
1 April 2024 at 12:25 pm #202819I think this is the answer:
May 1999, our final game was Vs Chesterfield at Springfield Park.
Latics win 3-1, courtesy of Liddell (2) and McGibbon.
And then, onto our final ever game at Springfield in the first round of the play-offs against Man City. Ends in a 1-1 draw with Stuart Barlow scoring for the Latics
Then we have the second leg at Maine Road and “the hand of Goater” finishes us off !
Just watched the You Tube clip and can’t believe how that tackle on Sharpie wasn’t awarded a penalty.
There was no “keep the ball” and bore the pants off everyone in this game; by either side. However, do you remember this one
Play-offs were introduced in the 86/87 season.
Our Manager was Ray Mathias.
Our last game was Vs Brentford at Griffin Park.
We win 3-2 to sneek into the play-offs, courtesy of Lowe, Cribley and Knowles.
Then we flunk the two legged round against Swindon.
I think we were two up home and it ended 3-2 to Swindon. Absolute shock of a game.
Then we could only manage 0-0 away, and Swindon go onto promotion in the final.Roller coaster stuff from the Latics.
1 April 2024 at 10:47 pm #202848I am thinking it could be this what you are thinking of….
I recall us playing Scunthorpe at SP. I think it was 95-96 and we had to beat them to have a last day chance of sneaking into play offs. I think we drew…I remember them scoring through a player called Sam Goodacre…think he had just come on. Other results didn’t go our way anyway.
2 April 2024 at 6:25 pm #202858Thanks yeah now I’m thinking back it was more than likely 1999
I remember going to the City away totally cheated out that one and there still doing it
2 April 2024 at 6:42 pm #202859Remember that City away game sat in that temporary open away stand in the corner at Maine Road. We should have won that game but for the ‘hand of Goat ‘ goal that robbed us. Graham Jones rattled the crossbar in the closing stages but it wasn’t to be!
2 April 2024 at 7:28 pm #202861Just watch the penalty shout on Kevin Sharp; on you tube.
Wonder what VAR would have made of that ? and the Goater hand !2 April 2024 at 8:01 pm #202862I seem to remember a game at home at the end of the 1995-96 season against Northampton Town.
Whelan had backed the then manager John Deehan very heavily in the transfer market and expectations were starting to rise.
Lost narrowly 2-1 and failed to make the play offs by a very narrow margin.
My main memory of this was after the game when a WIGAN RL fan was stood on his gate gloating at the very silent crowd as it passed his house near the ground.
He made then made a daft comment which was responded to very sharply with “ at least we’re not f*****g bankrupt” at which point the Rugby man beat a fast retreat as the grog was making moves to fill him in.2 April 2024 at 9:36 pm #202864Remember that City away game sat in that temporary open away stand in the corner at Maine Road. Yeah I was in that scaffold stand. I remember been late and coach driver dropped us off about 1/2mile away. We had to leg it and when we ran past the stand City fans were trying to trip us and kick us. Just as bad as their scum neighbors
3 April 2024 at 7:04 pm #202870I was also sat in that temporary corner stand and we all saw the handball.
City were helped along all that season as the powers that be, and City’s board had strong connections within the Football League, wanted them back up due to their size and financial clout as a club. I’ve seen this theory mentioned elsewhere as well, it was so obvious.
When ref Terry Helibron asked Goater if he had used his arm or not, surely there must have been some thought in his mind that he HAD used his hand? Was Goater ever going to say yes? Was he hell. And the tackle on Kevin Sharp, wow, how that never got us a penalty, I will never know.
I’ve hated City every since. They just came across as a really sh**house club who were pushed back up by the powers that be. Thankfully we’ve had our revenge since, more than once.
