Wigan chairman Dave Whelan speaking on BBC Radio 5 live about Callum McManaman’s challenge on Massadio Haidara:
“The ball was there. Young McManaman went in for the ball and got the ball as clean as a whistle, but in the follow through they collided. The referee saw it all, he had clear view on that.”
There were 2 involved. The Newcastle player had forward momentum & so did McManaman (albeit the latter with much more speed & force) & they collided. Not saying it shouldn’t have been a foul or a red card but it was a collision of sorts
For me the problem is that McManaman, in his haste to get to the ball first, misjudged the speed & bounce of the ball so that his right foot only glanced the top of the ball & followed through in the way that it did.
Had he connected with the ball with the meat of his foot then his follow through would have been different & the incident would not have occurred
But a referee can take into account that the speed with which he ran in & kicked at the ball was both excessive & dangerous & worthy of a red
The vilification of McManaman & Latics in general since the game is gettin on my nerves & no doubt Whelan’s hence why he’s spoke out- albeit he probably could have chosen his words a bit better. And I’m sure I once read an interview where he was slating the player who broke his leg & the challenege
I don’t condone bad tackles, but Jim White was pressing and pressing for him to back down from his opinion of the tackle. In good true Whelan tradition he wouldn’t budge so fair play to him.
When all the media and football fans everywhere are wanting Macmanaman hung drawn and quartered, our chairman once again has stuck by his players and defended our corner.
Though I appreciate what he was trying to do, it hasn’t really taken the heat off Callum has it? By claiming it was a fair clean tackle – which, let’s be fair, it wasn’t – he kept the debate alive.
That said, good old Rio Ferdinand has taken the heat away now ;)
Did Macmanaman apologise for the challenge do we know ? I know Uncle Dave still to this day says that he never received an apology from anyone at Wolves after his unfortunate incident and so if anything he should be making sure that an apology is made. To say that the tackle was as clean as a whistle is pure folly from Whelan I’m afraid ! Mr sound bite strikes again !
