So Whelan says it is not about money with Roberto, he wants assurances about training and academy facilities, etc.
Whelan says he needs time to ensure he can deliver on anything he promises Roberto in this regard, which is why the decision is adjourned until Monday.
What can’t Whelan guarantee delivery on at the moment, ie what doesn’t rely on him simply putting his hand in his pocket? Because if it was just a question of money, he would simply cough up, would he not? Planning permission for the new training ground, that’s one thing that is currently not in his gift. Would you like to be the council member responsible for Martinez leaving the club by refusing planning permission on the new training ground?
I suggest that this is a political charade being played out by Whelan and Bob, decided to deliver the training ground decision quicker than it might ordinarily have arrived. It wouldn’t be the first time.
Bob to be confirmed as staying on as Wigan manager sometime next Monday, would be my bet.
He started the Interview by saying “Roberto has asked me for some assurances” and that “He needs to get answers to go back to Roberto”.
Then at the end he says “I have asked Roberto to give me until Monday whilst I think about it”.
Seems that Bobby has asked him to cough up and he wants to get the calculator out first before committing! And if is a ploy to get little Wigan into the News Headlines and to rush the planning application through (Given the Council has “Believe in Wigan” plastered everywhere for self promotion the past few weeks – a good time to push!) it is Uncle Dave at his best!
Roberto is going nowhere and the foundations will be built to take Wigan Athletic to the ‘Next Level’ – A project Bobby has had in the pipeline all along and why he turned down Villa and Liverpool last year. He is building the club from the grass roots up – Similar to what Ferguson did at United years ago. Total Football Bobbby’s way!
We will look back in years to come and be calling for a Sir Roberto Martinez statue!

That’s a very cynical view !
Surely you don’t think an slightly batty old pensioner could be that manipulative do you ?

I think that ONLY a slightly batty old pensioner could be that manipulative.
The training facility at Wrightington is in West Lancs and it is West Lancs District Council who will determine the consent. Wigan MBC will be a consultee (as it borders their area). Therefore it is not the councillors of Wigan who will need to be lynched

So you honestly think that a bunch of nobhead councillors are so concerned about Wigan Athletic enough to rush planning through for Monday for the simple reason they don’t wan’t to be blamed for Martinez leaving Wigan ??
Yep, they’ll be shiitin their trollies when the “blue klux klan” roll up at their front doors !
Jesus wept .. I bet they don’t even know who Martinez is
Hmm – intriguing conspiracy theory there Griff! But Bob must have known last summer what the deal was as that’s when asked DW for the training facility. Am also very surprised that they haven’t got planning yet – I thought it was supposed to be ready by the start of the new season?
I also wouldn’t trust anything DW says as far as I could throw him – remember the stuff he said about Jewell’s health and then PJ the next day saying he didn’t know what DW was on about. And let’s not mention the war chest ;)
That said, I think Bob will stay, but for much simpler reasons…a combination of love and guilt. A bit like when you’re the reason your bird is now fat, but there’s no way you can dump her for a better offer cos of what it’ll do to her ;)
As far as the training facilities and academy are concerned, I thought that they were promised to Bob to make him stay last season. So, surely these plans are being pursued regardless?
Unless, as you say Griff, relegation has thrown a spanner in the works and Bob is making sure that Dave does not renege on the deal.
I reckon any and all plans/investments were dependant on us staying up. Just common sense really. Now Bob wants to know that the money will still be there despite relegation.
It’s all gravy to me but I hope that this doesn’t drag on for too long because there is plenty of work to be done squad-wise before our next campaign !
