Wigan owner Dave Whelan says the club will continue to bring in foreign imports due to an ‘alarming’ shortage of home-grown talent.

Manager Roberto Mancini has displayed an inclination to shop abroad since taking charge at the DW Stadium last summer, with just one English player, former Crystal Palace forward Victor Moses, amongst his 12 new signings.

But Whelan has defended Latics’ approach, insisting buying foreign players is the only way to ensure the club’s Premier League safety.

“Our priority here must be to keep this club in the Premier League and we will do whatever it takes to achieve that,” Whelan told The Sun.

“I would love to see a lot more English players in our side – and also in every other Premier League team.

“But the sad fact is that there is an alarming dearth of talent out there.

“It is not a question of whether players in the Championship and elsewhere represent good value. It is down to a lack of quality.

“That is why clubs like ourselves shop abroad.”

Whelan insists Wigan would have no problem enlisting an English player that met the same standard as their foreign imports.

“If you can show me players who are as good over here, I’ll happily open the cheque-book,” added Whelan.

“I don’t believe you will manage that, because, believe me, we have looked long and hard.”

I think DW is doing the right thing simply because their isn’t any good english players and we all seen that in the WC they all are average!

It would be a slighthly more balanced article if it mentioned the “British” players that he HAS brought in like Caldwell, McCarthy and McArthur, or the 11 youngsters given professional contracts back in May

I’d be interested to know what was the actual question that he was answering.

If it was about the current issues around the English national side then his comments make sense and, in that context, any mention of Scots would be irrelevant

I would have taken it seriously if it wasn’t in the Sun. That epitome of high quality journalism. FFS! They cant even get the managers name right

When you hear that Jimmy Bullard wants 75k a week to go to Celtic, can you blame managers for buying overseas? I would doubt we could afford the wage demands of most English players nowadays.

So Whelan has finally started to live in the now !! I wouldn’t take anything he says seriously anyway as he is a soundbite merchant who likes the sound of his own voice. A football bigot if you will !!
