to do it again in the coming month
Facts – we have played twice at home on 30/1 and 2/2, the result was the pitch deteriorated rapidly
Fact – Weather wise February is not a good month to get the pitch sorted out
Fixtures in February scheduled to take place
Latics 9th, 17th and 21st
Rugby 5th, 12th and 26thThe pitch will get worse of that there is no doubt, PL managers will criticize the state of it, the media will be onto it as well big time. Whelan doesnt like anyone being critical of him and / or his organisation so……
As DW kindly asked (told) the rugby men to change one of their fixtures previously – will he have the bottle to do it again?
5 February 2010 at 12:36 pm #21556Maybe it will work in our favour?
Perhaps it will hamper Liverpool, Villa, Arsenal, etc, from playing their best game?
Or will they moan about the pitch, so the Premier league dock us points?
5 February 2010 at 12:39 pm #21560May be if the pitch gets plenty ruts and seriously torn up, he whose name cannot be mentioned will come into his own.
5 February 2010 at 12:59 pm #21569my guess is and it is only a guess – that DW is already in talks with the rugby men about getting one of their fixtures reversed
5 February 2010 at 3:36 pm #21598I wish he had the bottle to tell them to get out of our ground completely.
If he bunged them a couple of million they’d snatch his hand off.Is that ground at Orrell not suitable enough for them?
5 February 2010 at 4:13 pm #21609He can’t as they have a lease, and a long one. And I would have thought the last thing we need in times like these is to pick another fight within the town.
Why is the pitch so crap every year though? How difficult is it to keep it in decent shape for 40 odd games a year. Someone wants sacking.5 February 2010 at 4:35 pm #21611we could keep upping the rent ,and also charge the rugby fans for excess weight due to stress on the seats, also have weigh bridges on turnstyles to keep the over 30 stoners out

The ground could be made suitable, but it doesn’t have enough access or car parking space.

There are other ways to get shut aswell, i.e. rent increases, moving their game times etc. I reckon they could be shifted quite easily if Dave had the inclination. Why is the pitch so rubbish every year though? How difficult is it to keep it in decent shape for 40 odd games a year. Someone wants sacking. There is never time for any proper pitch renovation works.
Look at the best pitches in the PL and count how many games are played on them and whether they are rested for 3 or so months during the summer months. The chubs are no more responsible really for ruining the pitch than us, its just they play on it when it should be being rested and repaired.

5 February 2010 at 11:16 pm #21661The last time we had the pitch re laid if im right i hear it cost £500.000 did they who wreck it pay out towards it. if it happens again will they pay.NO not a penny.CHUBBIES OUT.TAKE LINDSEY WITH THEE  ;)
6 February 2010 at 12:03 am #21662All depends if their contract as tennants includes them having to pay for stadium upkeep on top of their normal rent.

If and this a big if DW sell out to someone else will the stadium stay in the ownership of welco or would it be in the ownership of the new owners ?
6 February 2010 at 12:36 pm #21701the point of the thread though guys is not ousting the rugby – that is a seperate issue
but last time Whelan took almighty criticism about the pitch he moved a rugby fixture – huge moaning from outsiders (third parties, press, etc) is about to start again.
Will he get them to change a fixture – caused huge controversy last time and if I remember correctly even the most diehard critics of DW were actually wallowing in his decision6 February 2010 at 12:50 pm #21703If and this a big if DW sell out to someone else will the stadium stay in the ownership of welco or would it be in the ownership of the new owners ?It wouldn’t make any difference.
If the land your house is on house is leasehold and the the owner of the lease sells that leasehold to another company then the ground rent cannot be increased, as you have a fixed term agreement. The problem with the pitch was caused by Wigan Athletic training on it during the bad weather when they were unable to use their own training facilities.
The head groundsman went ballistic. Surely as a premier league club you would think that with all the money Wigan Athletic get from Sky they could afford training facilities with undersoil heating.
