Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has called for the Premier League to take over the running of the England team after their 4-1 loss to Germany in the last 16 of the World Cup.

Not like Dave to jump in with both feet, is it?

Whelan speaks his mind. Something that doesn’t always look good but when talking about England I think he’s spot on. Tends to speak sense especially when saying England should be managed by an English manager.

“but when talking about England I think he’s spot on”

Why the hell should the premier league have any say in the running of our national side??
The premier league is the biggest money grabbing organisation in the history of football that cares about nothing but profit. What positive input they could have on teh English national side is beyind me

Because the PL are a professional organisation, they can attract the best people in the game instead of Lord Snott’s mate from Eaton.

There has been a problem with the FA since…..always!

Do you honestly think Whelan would put the nation’s football team ahead of making a quick quid given the choice?

I will be forever grateful to Whelan for what he has done for our club….

Still doesn`t stop him being a tool though!

Englands failures reflects poorly on the Premier League so it’s in their interests to have a successful national team.

The FA are waisting millions on all sorts of projects yet English football is going backwards from the grass roots to the national team.

It matters not a jot to the premier league whether the England side is successful or not. Nor does the failure of the England side reflect badly on the premier league – it supplies more of its players to the world cup than any other league across the world
Its watched in more countries & by more people than any other league in the world. Some of the best players in the world ply their trade in it & over the last decade its provided more teams to the latter stages of the Champions league than any other league in Europe.
People like the blokes who lived on a rubbish dump in Kenya from some documentary I caught at 4 in the morning when my baby daughter was awake the other week who claimed to support Arsenal & Chelsea couldn’t give a rats @ss whether the England team is successful – neither could anybody else in any other country or “emerging market” that the PL is trying to expand its tentacles into.
Likewise the failure of England in the World Cup will have little or no effect on club’s ST sales or Sky’s viewing figures next season
Also at present we have clubs in the top flight owned by Russian’s, American’s, Abu Dabians (??) and God knows where else – why should any of them care how the England national team does??
Yet Dave Whelan is wanting to hand over control of the England team to this collection of people?? There’s plenty wrong with the FA but like most of the stuff that comes out of Mr Whelan’s mouth this proposal is nonsense

Whelan simply has a beef about the competence of the FA and he’s quite right, they are useless. But simply handing over its control to another corrupt, self-interested group is not the answer. Proper reform of the FA is what is needed to remove all the vested interest from those blazers; januts abroad, free cup final tickets, chauffuer-driven limos to Wembley, hob-nobbing with royalty – you know, all the things that football is really be about.

The Premier League is the main reason for our failure as the bigger teams (plus the likes of us) won’t take a chance on playing young English players because of the financial consequences of failure.

Anyone who doesn’t agree with this, try picking an U23 England team from outside this squad and see what you end up with.

So unless they’re planning on some self imposed rule about playing young English players, they shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near the England team.

There is a lack of English players but we can still put together a young and talented squad.

                  Hart
                  Baines
                  Dawson
                  Jagielka
                  Gibbs
                  Richards
                  Huddlestone
                  Cattermole
                  Noble
                  Milner
                  A.Johnson
                  Wiltshire
                  Lennon
                  Young
                  Walcott
                  Rodwell
                  Agbonlahor
                  Rooney

Good try No1, but I think you’ve just proved my point….if they’re the best we’ve got, we’re in trouble.

How many superstars did the Germany team have?

They picked young and hungry players who can learn on the world stage and maximise their potential.

The only established player in the initial German squad was Ballack.

His injury was a blessing in disguise as he would have slowed down the midfield and prevented them breaking with such pace.
