Just started reading it and it is quite a good read….the guy was a dab hand at a few things such as playing a brass instrument, playing table tennis, rugby and football. Tells the story where he did some trials for other football clubs. Also states that an old Wigan Athletic chairman offered him £200 to join Wigan (the chairman was Sid Littler) but he turned it down as he wanted to play in the league…..A very good read so far..
…just one point which made me frown a little, he states that Wigan Rugby was the majority sport in the town “and in all honesty, probably still is”
I will post again as soon as I get further in the book :)

Unless you want your trombone to sound like a cat being raped :D
21 September 2009 at 10:43 pm #9438I started the book at page 223, where he talks about latics, there are only about three paragraphs about the Rugby all the way to the end.
That was discussing what really happened with their board and how they stiffed their club and fans and left Whelan with the blame and the pieces.
Good story about him taking on Boots cos they didn’t like a liitle shop on the market doing better than them…. sound familiar????
FA Cup Winners 2013, sounds good that

Obviously I am going to regret this, but why oh why did you start at page 223?
22 September 2009 at 3:16 am #9457I was looking at the pictures in the middle (Oh boy am I going to regret typing that) and the first Chapter after them was about how he took on Boots in court and then it went on to Latics and the stadium, it was that good I carried on to the end. It was actually from page 169, not 223 – whose counting..
I’ll start the beginning tomorrow night…

I’m dying to read this book, but just think it’s a bit overpriced.
Considering Sir Bobby Charlton’s was only a tenner.
Dare say I’ll get it soon enough, though.

It will be in the bargain baskets before you can say Billy Boston !
22 September 2009 at 2:10 pm #9478Considering Sir Bobby Charlton’s was only a tenner. All profits of which probably went in his sky, Vat. Whereas all of the profit from Whelan’s book goes into the new Wigan Boys and Girls club fund, allegedly.
I think that you can put a substantial amount of the increase down to the increase in publishing costs since Bobby Charlton produced his papyrus version.
Some modern authors still manage to buck the trend, however.

10 October 2009 at 11:30 pm #10414This is a great read and explains everything about the man. It is a book that should be read by every Wiganer, Latics supporter and Wigan Warriors supporter.
It lays to rest all the myths and gives him an opportunity to give his version of some really historic events about Wigan Athletic, Wigan Rugby and his business interests. It also gives an insight into why he has been so successful in life.
Couldn’t put it down.
