The players will have had so little match practice. We have had so few friendlies again for the size of the squad which is and still will be ever changing untill Sept. Many players have not played 90 miutes in a game yet nor played together. Why no friendly this midweek? Seems like it should be a must if not just to get more game time.

          It’ll be fine.

It’s all in the build up and we certainly don’t want peak tooo soon.

As always, maybe, just maybe saving the best til last.

Friendlies? What are they good for? Absolutely nothing, say it again…

Oh sorry – got carried away there.

People seem to miss the point of friendlies. It’s not about seeing how the squad play together necessarily. It’s looking at individual players in a match situation rather than training.

“Why did X only play 30 minutes if he’s going to be a regular?” Because that’s enough for the manager to see he’s OK, and have a look at someone else.

If you really judge how we’re going to do, how we’re going to play, who is going to play, etc etc, by friendlies then you need to give your heads a wobble.

And that is a very good point and one that I have totally overlooked. Still think there should be more games with a side resembling the Coventry starting eleven playing a full match or two and especially one on our home turf, even more so after last seasons abysmal home record.

Multiple home friendlies isn’t going to happen. After 16 years I thought that may have sunk in. It’s one if we’re lucky.

Completely disagree there garswood…on both points. Your Edwin Starr reference is wide of the mark and your interpretation of the reason behind friendlies is also not, fully, correct. The main priority of these games is to improve match fitness which, I think you would agree, is a completely different approach to their normal training regime. Further, these ‘behind closed doors’ matches some allude to are also designed to improve on the players match fitness. I agree, the manager gets the opportunity of looking at individuals during these times but he also has that opportunity during training – hence the chopping and changing throughout the season.

If you really judge how we’re going to do, how we’re going to play, who is going to play, etc etc, by friendlies then you need to give your heads a wobble.

Bit harsh that. I think it’s those without the fullest of information who need heads wobbled.

Nobody thinks multiple home frindlies will ever happen but one each season is not too much to ask for surely.

Fat gets have 4 more home games. Could they not just play a couple at Leigh Horwich or Preston so we could play a few friendlies at home. Home advantage isn’t that important to them as they are annually given a place in the end of season knock out thingy. They don’t even treat their own fans at home with respect by playing weaker or stronger teams to manipulate a final adventaegeous position.

We share a ground with a rugby league side and seeing as it is still the rugby league season football friendlies are going to be few and far between! Let’s just hope that we hit the ground running and that GC quickly establishes a regular first 11 that bar injuries can gel as an efficient unit!
