I’ve gone mad with travel this year.

India in nine days time (mix of work and pleasure).
A week in France in Feb half term (skiing) with family.
A week in the US in April (again work mixed with a few days for myself).
Cottage in Devon during May half term with family and in laws.
Not quite a holiday, but 5 days at Glastonbury at the end of June and 3 days at Silverstone for the F1 in July.

Oh yeah, and Fulham this afternoon.

Still undecided on summer hols, but quite fancy Thailand, or Japan if I’m not bankrupt by then.

There’s an outside chance I might be going to Hawaii in September (work and pleasure again).

I definitely will not be going to Antalya. I love Turkey and have been to various places there, but the fortnight me and my wife had there twenty years ago is the worst holiday we’ve ever been on. Hope it’s got better for you.

20 years ago !! The Mrs said it is well nice in Antalya, I have never even been to Turkey but like to try different places so I am well up for it !

Thailand for me, but I’m travelling with the wife and kids so the only pingpong balls I’ll see are ones people are playing table tennis with.

Always fancied Thailand, but never been. Would you recommend it as a family holiday (we’ve got two teenagers)?
You’d get a decent price for two teenagers

My holiday usually ties in with Wigan playing Catalans away and I head to Southern France for a week.

This year though I’m taking the Mrs to New York in November for her birthday. 4 nights from Weds-Sun with the Thursday being thanksgiving so we get to see the parade. Probably head to places like Ground Zero, Empire State, Madison Square Garden, Statue of Liberty and the fake Central Park (;-)). Really looking forward to it.

Ps – if anyone has been and knows any interesting places to go then pm me please?

Egg, it’s a fantastic city, you’ll love it. You’ve got the obvious places there, but make sure you do the city bus tour. I know it’s an obvious thing to say but it really is a great way to learn where different palces are. Well worth it.

Last time I was there I went to Intrepid, I found it fascinating

Have to admitt Filmoss.. Great thread.. but when I’m sat here during a long day at work reading where everyone is going, it slightly depresses me and makes me want/need a Holiday right now! :woohoo:

I’ve never been before either. My brother, who lives in Aus, is meeting us there with his family, otherwise I don’t think it would have been my first choice of destination.

Fair play to you Northernprimate, how do you find the time to work with all them holidays.
Nothing booked yet but will be somewhere warm. Went to Cornwall last year and didn’t get much sun… Fair to say i won’t be going anywhere as extravagant as some of the places mentioned above

TBH when I read it back I thought I sounded like a right twat!

Most of the big trips are really work with a couple of days tagged on to the start or end.
 Not what i thought Northern…. good luck to you,
Hawaii – now that’s a place i’ve always fancied. One for when the kids have flown the nest though i think (so i can enjoy it  )

The trips involving work automatically exclude the kids and the wife, so I can REALLY enjoy those ;)

Actually just worked out it was 21 years ago this year. Well before marriage, kids or mortgage!
Looking at your link I realised we flew into Antalya, but the holiday was in Alanya just down the coast.
We were on the 7th floor of a hotel with no lift. It never went below 35 degrees day or night. The sand on the beach was too hot to walk on. Half a dozen locals had died because of the heat. We saw scorpions running across restaurant floors most evenings. Very few Brits, but loads of Russians and lots of power cuts caused by the Kurdish rebels who are just down the road.
On the positive side we were only there for two weeks

Agree with Griff. After San Francisco it’s my favourite US city. You’re going at the right time too. It’s much better in the cooler months.

As a change from the usual bickering and bad vibes, where are you going to for your holidays? We like to try somewhere different each year and so this year finds us opting for Antalya Turkey.I will also be jetting out to Austin Texas for a week with my brother and some mates for a week of psychedelic music and high jinx !
Any thoughts or tips on Antalya would be gratefully received ! B)

Went to Antalya a couple of years ago, stayed at Delphin Palace Resort in Lara Beach. Class hotel. 5 Star All inclusive….was very impressed. They came round all day with kebabs, etc. The choice of food was amazing.

Where are you staying? If it’s along Lara Beach the hotels along there are all supposed to be impressive. We had a spa and health club in our hotel and the Turkish bath and pampering I had….massages, etc, was well worth the £30 I paid. It also healed a sore muscle I had in my back that had been sore for months!

Not a lot to do outside the hotel, a few local shops selling designer fakes and fake football shirts….decent quality, actually, a lot of them. But our hotel was so superb with a fairground and superb waterslides, didn’t really need to go far. Plenty of cabins with drapes keeping them cool…..I took myself off after a few too many drinks and kebabs and went for a siesta…..super-duper.

And there IS a beach! Hotels along Lara Beach (kind of gives it away) are all ON the beach.

Been a couple of times.

Whereabouts are you staying?

It’s very easy to get around on the subway, which is a lot safer than you would imagine. For shopping, don’t miss Macy’s. It’s massive, and you should be able to pick up some designer clothes, etc a lot cheaper than here. Just use your brains and de-tag and bag them before putting them in your case….in case customs check and you are over the limit.

For kids toys, FAO Schwartz is THE place. It was in the film ‘Big’ with the giant piano.

The Empire State Building is great. Try and do it day AND night. NYC looks great when it’s all lit up.

Statue Of Liberty was closed when I went, due to terrorist threat, so I took the FREE Staten Island ferry that sails right past it, for a great view of it.

Food? Whatever you like, you will find it in this city. If you like Italian, get down to ‘Little Italy’. I really liked Da Nico’s on Mulberry street. Had to wait for 15 mins but noticed that locals were waiting too….and if New Yorkers will wait with the choice there is, it MUST be good!

Bars? Check out Jack Dempsey’s in Times Square, and P.J. Clarke’s on 57th street, I think. (Google it) Oh, I also remember going in one called ‘Robert Emmett’s’ as well. Did decent pub grub there as well.

For a local guide, check out ‘Big Apple Greeter’, where you can hire a local to take you around and show you places. I did this and it was worthwhile, as I wanted to see places off the beaten track such as ‘Hells Kitchen’-wanted to see the REAL New York and ended up in a neighbourhood diner where cops had stopped off for a drink!

I was warned against going to Harlem on my own, but I wanted to see the Apollo Theater on 125th street. I went anyway and whilst I stood out like a sore thumb as a caucasian, I was ok. It was a bit intimidating, but hey, I survived!

KATZ’S Deli is a bad tourist trap! Avoid. If you fancy an authentic New York Deli experience, I reccomend ‘2nd Avenue Deli’ for it’s superb Pastrami Sandwiches.

MUSIC FAN? Check out ‘Electric ladyland Studio’s’ on East 8th St. That was Jimi Hendrix’s studio. Also don’t miss the Dakota Building, where John Lennon was shot on West 72nd at Central Park West. When I was there, Yoko Ono was getting into a limo…..it was surreal actually.

CENTRAL PARK? It’s massive. 6 square miles. Take a carriage ride. The place is full of joggers.

We never usually venture too far from our hotel wherever we stay as we just chill for 7 days ! We always have a walk after our evening meal to see what there is nearby shop-wise and then it’s back to the hotel for all-inc drinks a plenty ! B)
