You can avoid Central London (and the cost of travelling through Zone 1) by taking a train from East Croydon to Wembley Central via Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction. Unfortunately, the Wigan pubs are on the other side of Wembley Stadium, closer to Wembley Park station.
There are direct trains hourly during the day – running from East Croydon to Milton Keynes – but most journeys require changes at Willesden Junction and Clapham Junction.
After the match, go to Wembley Central, where you will have to join the queue. You can catch the first train from Wembley Central going south. You will have to change at Willesden Junction for Clapham Junction – unless you catch one of the few trains going direct to Clapham Junction. Change again at Clapham Junction for Croydon.
For example;
20:00 Wembley Central [WMB] to Willesden Junction [WIJ] 20:07 London Underground service from Harrow & Wealdstone to Queens Park (London)
20:16 Willesden Junction Platform 5 [WIJ] to Clapham Junction [CLJ] 20:38 London Overground service from Stratford (London) to Clapham Junction
20:53 Clapham Junction Platform 13 [CLJ] to East Croydon [ECR] 21:02 Southern Trains service from London Victoria to Hastings
Journey time 1 hour 2 minutes.
For lots more possibilities, see National Rail Journey Planner.
Fares can be expensive without an Oyster card. And more so fares for journeys across Central London (Zone 1). The minimum cash fare in Zone 1 at any time is £4.50, with an Oyster card £2.10.
Just for comparison, fares from Clapham Junction are;
to Wembley Central via Willesden Junction
Cash any time £4.50
Oyster card peak £2.30
Oyster card off peak £1.50 including Saturday and Sunday
to Wembley Park via Willesden Junction and West Hamstead
Cash any time £5.50
Oyster card peak £3.80
Oyster card off peak £2.70
to Wembley Park via Central London, Zone 1
Cash any time ???? but certainly much more than Oyster!
Oyster card peak £5.10
Oyster card off peak £3.90

This may seem stupid but can you get a oyster card for a weekend and how would one go about it
You can order em online at tfl.gov.uk & they cost a fiver although that seems to be a refundable deposit.
Doesn’t seem worth it for me to be honest – staying in East Acton. I’ll get a 1 day travelcard for zones 1-4 for £8. With an oystercard the price cap for a day’s off peak travelling between for zones 1-4 is £7.70 & I’m likely to make at least 4 trips on the tube which with an oystercard would cost me £2.70 each (without the price cap)
An Oyster card will quickly pay for itself. Fares are much cheaper and the card also has a price cap – the maximum you can pay in one day in Central London off peak may be about £7.00. You can also fill in a form to register the card and then link it to a Student or Senior rail card. Bus passes are valid on London buses too!
You can buy the Visitor Oyster cards on-line in advance. The card costs £3. Visitor Oyster cards are only available for adults. However, an adult with a Visitor Oyster card can take up to 4 children under the age of 11 years to travel for free on Tube, DLR and London Overground services.
Delivery times for United Kingdom – Estimated 2 to 4 days
You can buy ordinary Pay As You Go Oyster cards on-line and at Underground ticket offices and on the concourse at Euston station – they are very similar to the Visitor Oyster cards. You will need to pay £5 deposit when you get a new Oyster card, which is refundable if you return the card.
You put credit on the cards – like a phone card – and automatically pay as you go. £20 should cover a weekend. You must touch in at the start of your journey and touch out at the end. If you forget to touch out, you will be charged a higher fare!
An Oyster card is a sensible investment, but there is an alternative, the Day Off Peak Travelcard, say
For Saturday, Zone 1-4 to include Wembley £8.00
For Sunday, Zone 1-2 for Central London £7.30
A Zone 1-6 card for a child costs £3.40 for a day
I hope that helps – an Oyster card is really quite simple to buy and use.
If 10 or more in your group you can get the not very well advertised group day ticket for around £4.50 each but you need to ask for it, as most ticket offices i’ve used for some reason don’t seem to volunteer
the info.
Group Ticket… There are four adults and two children going. So we are getting a group ticket i.e. 4 adults and 6 children. Still cheaper although we aren’t using 4 of the children tickets.
i.e. 6 adult tickets at £8.00 per day =£48.00 x 2 for Sunday = £96.00.. With the group ticket. 4 adults at £4.50 per day= £18.00. 6 childrens tickets (up to age 18)at £1.70 per day =£10.20 Total £28.20 x2 for Sunday £56.40 ;)
