20 February 2011 at 6:45 pm #60077Cantona, most definitely.
He was sublime. Ok, he was a maverick, and you never quite knew what you were going to get, but what an amazing player.
And to think they signed him on the back of Leeds contacting United, to enquire about Dennis Irwin, which was rejected straight away. Martin Edwards was on the phone, talking to the Leeds Chairman, and Alex Ferguson, sat alongside him, quickly scribbled on a piece of paper ‘ask him about Eric Cantona’. So he did, and the Leeds chairman went and asked Howard Wilkinson, who said a deal could be done, and the rest in history. I think there was some things going on at Leeds. I’ve heard Cantona was slipping one to Leslie Ash, behind Lee Chapman’s back. (this was before she had the ‘lip job’)
£1.1 million, I think the fee was. Crikey, what a bargain, considering all he gave United. Best bit of business they will ever do.

Interesting to read about Leslie Ash! Lucky git

And in fact Ferguson rang to ask about buying Chapman but was offered Cantona instead
20 February 2011 at 9:06 pm #60081Cantona reminded me of our very own Tony Kelly.

He doesn’t say that in his autobiography, Griff.
I posted it exactly how he tells it in the book.
Leeds made an enquiry about Dennis Irwin, United refused, and asked about Cantona. And the deal happened. I always remember my dad coming and actually near enough waking me up, as I’d not long gone to bed.
“You’ll never guess who United have signed…..Eric Cantona!”
Everyone was surprised, because he’d played such a big part for Leeds success and league title.20 February 2011 at 10:43 pm #60102Howard Wilkinson didn’t know how to handle Cantona and his behaviour so off he went to United where Sir Alex made him into a legend – despite the odd faux pas

I’ve got his autobiography here. Quite a good read, as should be anybody’s book who has been in football for so long. Mines the out-dated version, though. Only really goes up to about 2000. Still, good for a flick through when you’re sat on the throne.
