I watched the incident last night and the ref and the linesman didnt see the head butt.
The 4th official saw it and notified the ref.
It is not the 4th officials job to make decisions for the ref.
I am suprised no one has even bothered to mention this.
I agree he should have gone but without the 4th official no one could have made that decision.

The 4th official can assist the referee in these matters.

The referee makes the decision, but his team of officials assist him.

        They are called “assistant referees”.

What exactly do you think their job is?

I was on about that to somebody last night. My seat is not a million miles from where the 4th official was
and to me it did look as though he made the decision.

The linesman from over by the east stand came running over as though he’d seen it but i didn’t see him contribute to the conversation,

By the way i also agree that he should have been sent off, but wiltshire did look a bit pathetic though, also IMO Zoggy was lucky not to get sent off at everton for kicking bainsy int leg, in another fit of temper / petulance

I think we’re confusing what “making the decision” means.

The 4th official sees something and reports it to the referee. He has no decision to make – he is reporting facts.

The referee then makes a decision what to do about it – in this case actually very little to decide.

4th official reports facts – referee makes decision. Simples.

It was funny that even though the majority of them had their backs to the incident , when the ref stopped play about 7 or 8 Arsenal players all ran to the ref to tell him what had happened.

Also , even if the 4th official hadn’t seen the incident you can bet the ever observant and fair minded Wenger will have filled him in on the details. ;)

Regardless of all that Zog was an idiot and deserved to go !!!

Head butting an eighteen year old, Bet it made him feel really macho.

Call that a head butt, pppfffft, Owd Yosser would teach him a thing or two.

And in a way, so does ‘butted’.

                The Mirror describes the incident:
“N’Zogbia put the head on Wilshere off the ball”

Undoubtedly the 4th official drew the ref’s attention to the incident. Pity he didn’t draw his attention to Bendtner decking Cleverly with a smack in the face which happened right in front of him and of course Wenger didn’t see that either.

Well I suppose if you are going to ‘tup’ someone in front of the referee then please do it properly or not at all. If Zoggy was serious he could’ve ensured Wilshire needed hospital treatment etc, but he didn’t all he did was give JW the equivalent of a kiss.

I wonder what it was that so incensed Zoggers in the first place?
