…… exactly what did happen to give us the final free kick. To me it looked a bit like some play acting that Powell started down by the goal line when their keeper was time wasting, then it developed then got out of hand, then there was a foul by Warnock or someone down at our end near our penalty box, which was ignored then ………. oh god I don’t know what happened and why ……… there must be someone who knows what went on?????
9 April 2017 at 1:57 pm #157787I wasn’t there, but from looking at the telly, Powell has stood near the keeper but far enough away to allow him to release the ball (as witnessed by the fact the ball winds up down near Latics penalty area direct from the kick).
However he’s close enough for there to have been some contact after the ball was released which has led to a bit of handbags which I’m guessing that the assistant spotted & told the ref that the keeper was the first to commit an offence – hence a Latics free kick & 97th minute winnerSimples!! ;)
9 April 2017 at 1:57 pm #157788Guy who comes to the match with us says the keeper jumped on Powell’s back, almost as though he was giving him a piggyback. That was the key action, obviously in the preceding seconds they had been niggling each other but not sufficient to cause the referee any concern.
The keeper was an idiot. He had cleared the ball (albeit after faffing about time wasting) – he should just have let it go.9 April 2017 at 2:23 pm #157789The keeper was an idiot. 9 April 2017 at 3:22 pm #157790Indeed, mutty!
The “jumping on the back” scenario is strengthened by these comments from the Rotherham board
“Lewis Price
Now I wasn’t there but the commentator said that he kicked the ball upfield and during an altercation with the player he jumped on his back!If this is true which I doubt then it shows a total lack of professionalism which incidentally runs through the club starting with Poland.
I would sack him instead of laughing and joking and slurping from a mug of tea.”
9 April 2017 at 3:23 pm #1577929 April 2017 at 3:37 pm #157794Speaking of the Rotherham Board, where were they yesterday? Their section of the directors box was empty yesterday.
Are they boycotting games in protest?9 April 2017 at 5:01 pm #157797All i remember leading up to the incident was the crowds initial reaction at powell to chase the ball & put pressure on the keeper. At that point powell just seemed content to let the ball go to the keeper. Powell then reacted following the chants from the crowd.
I missed what happened next as all i remember is powell stood next to the keeper who then launched it down the other end. As i was watching the flight of the ball, i never noticed the alceration. It was only the crowd shouting out that i then turned back to the incident & saw powell & the keeper having a go.
Next thing, the ref consults the linesman. We get a free kick & the rest is history. I wonder, just wonder if that is a turning point that somehow saves our season.
Or should i get my coat…..
9 April 2017 at 5:41 pm #157798Who gives a flying fcuk about the circumstances leading to the goal. Its time summat went our way for a change albeit too late to save us
9 April 2017 at 9:28 pm #157805Powell ran up to the keeper to pressurise him and as the keeper whacked it up field, Powell just turned his back on him and stood his ground.
When the ball had gone, for no reason at all their keeper jumped on Powells’ back, Powell then got him off his back and they the faced up to each other.
Meanwhile, the ball was at the other end and the ref turned round to see them at each other and blew up and ran back. The linesman obviously must have made him aware of everything, and probably spoke to the referee through his earpeice to get back and sort it out.
Fortunately common sense prevailed (although we thought it started in the area and was going to be a penalty). We probably would have missed a penalty so a free kick was better.9 April 2017 at 9:47 pm #157807Powell ran up to the keeper to pressurise him and as the keeper whacked it up field, Powell just turned his back on him and stood his ground.

I don’t know why, but something made me keep watching Powell after the keeper had kicked the ball. Maybe because Powell’s a snidey shit and I half expected something to kick-off. Didn’t expect it to end so well in our favour, though! Most useful contribution Powell has ever made!

Same here, I think I kept my eye on him for the same reason half expecting him to have a do with the keeper.
I think he could have made a difference this season. When he is fit and up for it he is a class act. The free kick was excellent. Gilbey also looked a lot better yesterday and even Obertan showed some glimpses of what he can do.
I can’t see us getting out of this now, but at least if we show a bit of balls for the rest of the season and go down fighting it will be something.10 April 2017 at 12:05 am #157817I think this clarifies why we got a free kick
10 April 2017 at 2:22 am #157822I think this clarifies why we got a free kickAnd it looks to me that it should have been a penalty as I suspected. Thank goodness the linesman said it was outside the box.
12 April 2017 at 11:01 am #157858I think this clarifies why we got a free kickIn all seriousness…..is that keeper suppressing a smirk, somewhat?
Was this a genuine ‘kick off’ or had Powell had a word and got us a free kick opportunity?
I’m not complaining, but he hardly looks angry.
