Now we knew that Latics Player was popular, after all the number of subscribers grew by over 30% in the 2009/10 season.  But we had no idea that even celebrities were trying to get a piece of the action – namely ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’ presenter, Chris Tarrant.

During Saturday’s full match commentary from St. Andrews, Latics’ lead commentator Graham Lovett was describing the action in his usual ‘unique’ style, when 20 minutes into the game his iPhone rang (there is another tale there by the way, but that’s for another day.)

Now in these circumstances the normal practice would be to switch off your phone and continue with your work, however Graham, seeing that the number was from the London area, feared that it may be the website’s communication centre, in London, with news of some sort of technical fault.  So he handed the phone to his co-commentator, Latics Media Officer, Paul Chialton.

Paul duly removed his headset and answered the call in a tone loud enough to be heard in a stadium with 22,000 occupants, but quiet enough not to be heard by the commentary’s listeners.

His face soon dropped when the voice on the other end said: “Hi, this is Chris Tarrant from Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, I have Simon with me and he needs your help to win a quarter of a millions pounds!

“What would you do at this point? You would probably try and help the guy right? Of course so did Paul but not without first turning a shade of white that Dulux would probably refer to as ‘brilliant.’

Unfortunately, he didn’t know that Arsenal played their first game at Highbury in 1913, a Simon ended up having to make do with £125k.

        Interesting
