Just read Lee McCulloch could be playing as a centre half tonight, he was half decent in the air, as was Jonesy, Campbell, Methven,Bradd etc, but who was head and shoulders (excuse the pun) above the rest? I’m gonna be controversial here, my vote goes to Andy Holden.
16 September 2009 at 7:54 pm #8889Andy Holden was a good and strong center half ,but one that sticks in my mind was Steve Walsh hard as foo k that mon and strong in the air
16 September 2009 at 8:00 pm #8890Aye Walshy was hard. I remember Hamilton referring to him as “old stone face.” :x
16 September 2009 at 8:03 pm #8891Breckin was pretty strong in the air just didn’t have much pace
16 September 2009 at 8:13 pm #8892Always thowt Breckin should of chipped in with a few goals.
16 September 2009 at 9:03 pm #8897barrow once scored from edge of box with a header at springy park, quality
17 September 2009 at 12:01 am #8911jason De Vos, Alan Johnson and Colin Greenall were pretty good with their heads too.
My vote goes with Steve Walsh though.17 September 2009 at 12:33 am #8912jason De Vos, Alan Johnson and Colin Greenall were pretty good with their heads too.
My vote goes with Steve Walsh though.the best was without doubt bobby cambell, closely followed by les bradd, john king and john rodgers for those old enough to know,
ellington in more recent times wasnt bad,the goal at west ham the season we came up,where he just hung in the air for ever was one of the best headed goals i have seen from a latics player.17 September 2009 at 1:08 am #8913I remember Steve ‘rubber neck’ Johnson scoring with a diving header from the edge of the box at the Town End at Springy. That was probably the best header I’ve ever seen.
For consistently good heading of the ball though, it has to be Colin Methven.17 September 2009 at 2:59 am #8922Always thowt Breckin should of chipped in with a few goals. He did…..When he left !!!!

17 September 2009 at 2:40 pm #8952At the risk of getting slated, Breckin, De Vos and McCulloch were all great headers of the ball, but in terms of always getting a head to the ball, very few ever beat Heskey in the air. Not always accurate, but nine times out of ten, his head was first to it.
And more controversially, Chimbonda had the leap of a much taller man and was rarely beaten in the air.
