but us.
When you read articles, like I have this week (broken leg, can’t do owt else), why is it the vast majority say that we play ‘much more entertaining football’, ‘are great passers of the ball’, ‘Martinez is much older than his years and gets a side playing the right way’ or ‘Latics are going in the right direction’.
I know the last one will get the clowns comment, but all the same, is it just some of the supporters that can’t see this or is it the pundits/sports writers that are wrong.
26 February 2011 at 1:37 pm #60438Good point mate and one of life’s great mysteries.
It appears passing backwards and sideways is fashionable like playing wingers who are right footed on the left etc.
26 February 2011 at 2:03 pm #60442Don’t know the answer for sure, but on one side of the argument you have professional people who have played and coached at the highest level favouring this backwards and sideways keep possession type thingy, and on the other side are a bunch of spotty herberts fannying about on message boards all day.
All about opinions, though.
26 February 2011 at 2:04 pm #60443Oh, and “Martinez is much older than his years” must have been written by an imbecile.
26 February 2011 at 3:40 pm #60446Because most of the so called pundits dont actually watch the games they see highlights and look at the stats. For most of the games we have had more possession and this is where the “experts” get their passing team from.
However we watch them week in week out and realise that most of this passing is across our back four or backwards or sideways26 February 2011 at 4:08 pm #60449But would you rather be known as a side who plays from the back (albeit very slowly, and often with no success), or like Stoke City, with their anti-football tactics?
26 February 2011 at 4:12 pm #60450Sorry Griff but as a paying customer I think I’m entitled to an opinion. You are of course free to make sarcastic and patronising remarks but bear in mind these professionals you refer to get paid, and seem to mindlessly follow whatever is flavour of the month in the coaching manuals no matter how boring or ineffectual. Professional sports clubs have a duty to entertain not make me feel relieved when we don’t have a match. As a paying fan I want to see more direct football and a few risks being taken and more goals scored by us, not back wards and sideways 3 foot passes by overpaid gimps. As for fannying around on message boards all day all I can say is you must be a boss at your work place.

26 February 2011 at 9:40 pm #60465Took that a bit personal there, didn’t you Hugh?
Firstly, i was including myself on the spotty Herbert brigade.
Secondly, the pundits dont choose to play possession football and wingers on the “wrong” side, coaches do. The coaches who have all (mostly) played the game professionally. I’ll take their opinion before yours, mine and anybody else’s on here.
But, as I already said, you are perfectly well entitled to your opinion. So am I, and I am also entitled to deliver it sarcastically, if I choose

Martinez plays his football like he likes his haircuts:
short, back and side(ways).
And then what you’re left with is something you’re never happy with while all around you on the floor are memories of what used to be there before you decided you wanted to change things.
27 February 2011 at 12:14 pm #60562No I didn’t take it personally Griff I just think you’re a bit harsh on us for daring to voice our opinions. I don’t share your respect for the abilities of Martinez and his team just because they’ve been paid to play the game at one time and at a far lower level. Whatever he is doing is not working and should not be exempt from criticism. I recognise it’s difficult for smaller clubs to stay in the prem but I still expect us to fight.
