How can he leave McArthur on the bench and play Gomez who does NAFF ALL. Does’nt create anything can’t tackle and his work rate compared to the other midfielders is zilch. Is it bacause he scored a hat trick ? Marcus Bent scored a hat trick too and he was CRAP.

I do think McArthur should start, but Gomez was excellent last week against Spurs so deserved his starting place.
To be fair he is probably our most improved player this season. He may have a way to go to become a Latics legend, but he is a Latics player so will get my support whilst he is on the pitch.
Martinez seems to know what he is doing at the moment, and saw it wasn’t working today, so changed it.
Credit where credit is due, Martinez did what he needed to do today, and he sorted it out when it was required.

I don’t know why we only start playing when we go behind, I think only the players could answer that one.

It could possibly down to blind panic? or maybe they start thinking ‘Crikey we best do summat here now’?

I know one thing, coming from behind and getting a result like that can only do good for confidence. Roll on Tuesday. :cheer:

        Come on Wigan!!!!!!!! goodpost

Correct shows we have fight in the team as well

As per your avatar, stick to rounders – you clearly know nothing about football.

Do we only start playing when we go behind,? discuss.

It’s a trait of Bob’s me thinks. He is very predictable, just as every season we play our best stuff in the last ten games or so.

If going a goal down is what motivates the team to step up a gear and grind out a result then I’ll take that at the moment. Not good for anyones nerves though!

Going behind seems to stop the nervousness, the obvious pressure to perform, going behind u can just get on with the job n shoot at will……….

roll over n go to sleep, hope this answers the question and improves things for u ;)

At least Griffin on here has got half of a brain.

              Thanks, I think

maybe because he has scored 9 goals from the midfield position he occupies

because his OVERALL contribution to the team has warranted his inclusion (step up on prior year) ….. not just goals (penalties included ….. we’ve already had this discussion)

              Credit where due.

I believe the 9 have come from both front 3 / midfield positions he has occupied ….

Martinez said the substitution had been planned. “James McArthur was the best player for us against Spurs. Today I knew the game would need a second injection of energy. His first touch changed the game completely.”

McArthur has been coming on regularly as a substitute since the Everton game. It now appears that it’s not a simple choice between Gomez – or presumably McManaman – and McArthur. It’s a plan to get the best out of the squad.

McArthur certainly had an immediate effect on Saturday. Watson also made a surprise return to the team to fill the gap in the defence. There is much more to Martinez than meets the eye.
