Just on the off chance anyone here knows or has an old programme.

I’m trying to ascertain Wigan Borough’s colours between 1924 and 1926. Before then they wore red and white halves, after they wore amber and black hoops. In between they had pale plain shirts that may be either gold or pale blue.

It may just be that someone has an old Borough programme that says (there was one sold for example a few years ago http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/1957340 but the picture is to small to make anything out).

Please do not point me to Historic Football Kits (I’m working with them on this) or my own site. But if anyone has the info (and a source) I’d love to hear from you.

Taken from the recent book about the ‘Boro.
“A change of colours, to amber and black hoops for the 1926-27 season prompted the local correspondent to speculate whether the team should be known as the WASPS rather than the LINNETS”(what colour are Linnets?)
The ‘Boro programme I have is when they were a league club in the 1930’s.
Maybe there would be some information in the match reports in the Observer????
I have some more information, on Wigan Borough, somewhere? I’ll see if I can dig it out.

Thanks, bronx. Yes I’ve got that book too which is where I now have the info that they had plain shirts 1924-26 changing to the amber and black hoops in 1926.

If no-one can provide any help then I’ll have to get myself down to the History Shop and plough through papers hoping for one little line of “a wave of blue shirts pressed forward” or similar. I just hoped that maybe there was the off-chance someone could resolve it easily.

Just checked a photocopy of the Wigan Boro v Bradford programme. dated March 29th 1924 and it says the colours are RED & WHITE. It would appear they changed their colours for the 24/25 season?
If you want a copy of the programme let me know.
As they were called the LINNETS I would think they would have played in Yellow or Green??????

Yep – it looks like 1924/25 and 1925/26 they wore the plain shirts.

And yes please I’d love a copy if you scan for me.

(Have PMd you my e-mail address)

On a cig card I’ve got somewhere, they wore white shirts and shorts in 1925 and a photo for 1925/6 has them in plain gold shirts and white shorts

If you’ve got a source for that Bert I’d be really interested

The cig card is on George’s site and I’m pretty sure Ron Hunt holds the original:Right at the bottom
The 1925/6 photo was sent to me many years ago by a bloke in Shevington. I’m not putting any details up here because he’s in his 70’s and won’t appreciate being mithered. It’s pretty widely available and the cheeky gets have used part of it on that new book – “Wigan Borough in the Football League – A Complete record and Who’s Who 1921-1931”
              book
Send me a mail if you want a copy

              Hi Bert.

              I am George ;) .

The card which I have myself actually shows them in pale blue shirts and white shorts, but from the stuff on the back I can pinpoint the game to 1928 when Boro wore black and amber hoops. As they were playing Bradford PA who were wearing red, amber and black hoops Boro were wearing their change strip. It is the previous two seasons 1924/25 and 1925/26 I need.

I will PM you my e-mail address. How do you know the 1925 photo is gold though? I’m coming across the possibility it might actually be green, but hoping for some confirmation. I’d still love a good copy anyway!

I have a copy of the match report of the first home game of the 1925/26 season. It was against Coventry City and Boro are referred to as ‘the Linnets’ within the report.

George, DO NOT BOTHER TRAWLING through the history shop because I have copies of everything they have got on Boro. I’ll have a root for you tomorrow.

The only reference to colour that I can recall offhand were the colour of the print of matchday poaters which incidentally were blue.

In fact at the July 1924 AGM there was an argument about the Boro chairman using the Boro name to advance his credentials as a conservative councillor for the St Andrews Ward (that’s why the colour blue was objected to).
