Roberto Martinez admits that Wigan have pulled out of a deal to sign striker Marcelo Moreno permanently.

The Brazil-born Bolivia international joined the Latics on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk in January and despite failing to score in 12 Premier League appearances still impressed the Latics staff.

A fee was pencilled in should Wigan want to make the deal permanent but Martinez now believes the figure is too high for the club’s renewed transfer budget.

The Spaniard understands that having shelled out €12million on the former Cruzeiro ace in summer 2008 Shakhtar are looking to recoup some of their investment, with reports that a club in Brazil have made a substantial offer for the frontman.

“There are massive implications to think about if we want to sign Marcelo,” he told the Evening Post.

    Big offer

“He cost Shakhtar around €12million and I know they have received a big offer recently from a club in Brazil.

“I have spoken to Shakhtar and we’re going to keep in touch, but I’m sure they will want to pursue the best financial offer that they receive.

“In terms of the future, it’s very difficult to know what Shakhtar will decide, because they have the main say on the matter.

“We had the opportunity to make the deal permanent, but financially we could not meet the kind of valuation that they had.”

Despite failing to settle at Shakhtar Moreno seemed to enjoy his short stay at the DW Stadium among a host of fellow South American stars.

“From our point of view, I am delighted Marcelo enjoyed his time with Wigan and he was made to feel at home,” Martinez added.

“He played 12 games for us and played a big role in helping us achieve our aims of staying up. We are now going to wait and see what Shakhtar and the player want to do.

“However I think it is very unlikely that we will see Marcelo back here – due to the financial situation.”

    New focus
Wigan have now switched their attention to Argentina international Mauro Boselli after reportedly agreeing a £6.2million fee with the 25-year-old striker’s club Estudiantes.

The Latics are also thought to be interested in Nancy midfielder Landry N’Guemo. The Cameroon ace spent last season on loan at Celtic with the Hoops having first option on the 24-year-old until Thursday.

However the Old Firm giants appear to have stalled on a permanent offer leaving the door open for Wigan to make a move.

    Great, more Carlos Kickaball types.

Bringing in foreign mercenaries who will leave at a drop of a hat doesn’t build much of a bond between team and fans.

Aye them years have gone now I blame Chimbonda the biggest culprit ever to grace this club

      #36775

I bet we havent made much more money out of a foriegn import than Chimbonda though !

You don’t really realise what kind of club we are, do you?

And most of our fans don’t deserve bonding with, to be fair.

Yes, I’ve watched us for 30 years. To me, there’s been four generic types of players that have kept us in the Prem. I’d like to add a fifth.

        1. Rehabilitations. Best examples, Heskey, Bramble, Kirkland. Established players who’ve lost their way and found themselves again at Latics.

        2. Old Hands. E.g De Zeuw, Henchoz, Melchiot. Proven quality that has a year or two to give.

        3. Lower division finds – e.g McCarthy, Boyce, Moses, Taylor. Good young talent that we are in a position to give first team football to.

        4. Foreign “passers through” – Chimbonda, Valencia, Palacios, Scharner, probably Rodallega, Diame, Figueroa. We get a year or two before flogging at a profit.

        5. I’d like to add a category of home developed players that will have a real link and bond with the club. We’ve only had Baines in this so far.

I’m saying I’d like less of category 4, and more of 1, 2, 3 and 5. Sorry if that means I’ve got no idea according to you.

I don’t care where our players come from, we should just go for the best players even if that means they come from abroad. Players like Valencia and Palacios kept our finances under control and its likely Roda will do the same. Maynor has been an excellent servant up to now, much better than some of the lazy british players we have bought.

I just want us to sign level headed players with as much ability as we can get.

That’s a far better post than your original throwaway Carlos Kickaball comment. My point was that we are a very different club than we were 30 years ago and to survive, the “here today, gone tomorrow” Carols Kickaballs that we can recruit cheap and sell dear represent the best way of making ends meet.

I think that any decent home-grown kids in this area get snapped up by the bigger clubs. I agree it would be nice to have more coming through, though.

Hey, look at this. A debate! With no grammar corrections and no 13-year olds spamming :)

It amazes me that we don’t put more effort in. If you look at the local “big” clubs, most of them, particularly Liverpool, don’t give their kids a chance. We should be able to push to parents that their kids might actually get a go at Latics. But I suppose to many parents its an ego trip “my lad is at Utd” even though they’re unlikely to get a chance, and by the time the big clubs decide they’re not going to make it they’ve often missed the boat in terms of development In a wider context, what parent in their right mind would let their kid sign for Arsenal? (Unless they’re French)

On my original point, I think someone posted that they felt no bond with this team when they were doing the lap of honour, which I agree with to an extent apart from a few, as most of the current first team have no apparent love of the club.

On the last bit, I’d say that’s the case with 95% of players and clubs not just Wigan, sadly.

And you’re bang on about the pushy parents thing. Someone was bragging to me the other week that his lad (5) was training with United. “At Carrington?”, I asked. “No”, came the reply, “they have regional centres like Preston”. “So your lad’s at Preston then?”. No, he’s at the United regional centre in WIgan. Wigan’s a regional centre for United’s Preston regional centre”.

So basically, the lad – no disrespect – is a million miles away from being picked up by United (or anyone, probably) yet his dad is happily deluding himself (and his lad) that the boy is likely to be the next Rooney. He is not remotely interested in pushing his kid towards Wigan because “he’s at United, you know?”

I’d like to see more players come through from our current youth team, etc. but do we have any players that look promising? I’ve never been to see the reserves or under 18s play so I have no idea, although someone I know says that Callum McManaman doesn’t look too bad.

Although that could mean he’s not too good either :|

I think ti is wrong of you to put Scharner in the ‘Passers through’ Category. He stayed, saw out his contract (Although stated he wanted to leave a few times) and also we are not selling him for a profit so that voids him from that group. So then which group would you say he was in.

Also I don’t mind the ‘passers through’ if we get a good season or 2 out of them and get a profit. Helps the club stay afloat.

I don’t want to see many more of the ‘lower division’ finds. One or 2 have come good and Moses probably will too. But then there’s Scotland, Taylor (Who you quoted as being a successful one, but he wasn’t very good, and Newcastle fan I know says he is awful and that was in the championship!) amongst others.

Would love to see more players come through the ranks and would like McManaman to be given more time in the 1st team. Also think that maybe we should be concentrating on getting players through our ranks because of the situation we are in, no need to go out and risk paying money for signings either if we have a good standard to come through the ranks.

Yes, Scharner is a funny one – I included him because he would have been off like a shot if a bigger club had come in for him, but his ability on the pitch didn’t match that in his head, and he never played for long enough in his best position of centre half. But he did give us a good few seasons. Like you, I don’t mind a few of these types, but I predict under Martinez we’ll be seeing a lot more than I would like.

I don’t mind picking up good young players from the lower leagues, as long as we can get decent quality. We should be at the advantage of offering first team football. McCarthy is a good example – its been good for him coming here as if he’d gone to a top 7 side he’d still be waiting for his first game. I disagree with you about Taylor. He was no Zidane, but always worked hard and good on a dead ball, winning us quite a few games. I think his injuries didn’t help him fulfill his potential. I don’t think you could call him a failure – think we only paid 1-2 million?
