Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has snapped up Mexico World Cup striker Guillermo Franco on a free transfer after his shock exit from West Ham.
Lively Franco helped Hammers to beat the drop but was not offered a new deal and has spent the summer looking for a new home.
But now Latics have taken them into their Latin dressing room on a one-year contract worth £600,000 as replacement for Ipswich-bound Jason Scotland.
Franco, who wants to settle in England with his family, will try to get himself fit for a quick debut but is unlikely to be ready for the Tottenham trip on Saturday.
Meanwhile Wigan have had better news on left back Maynor Figueroa who will only be missing for just three weeks with an ankle injury.
Hopefully if Martinez does tend to play 4-4-2,Maybe Franco will play up front with Boselli with Rodders playing wide left..

Are you utterly mad????First of all for thinking that Roberto will do anything other than 1 up front.
Secondly, even if he did play 2 up top, why wouldn’t Rodallega be one of them when everybody acknowledges that he is being wasted out wide and would contribute better as part of a two-man forward line?
Thirdly, why would anyone pin their hopes on Franco, an old git who couldn’t get a game for West Ham, who is (hopefully) only being considered as cover?
25 August 2010 at 12:12 pm #44095He is 33 but scored 6 goals in the league for West Ham last season – that’s 5 more than Scotland. :o

See points 1) and 2) above
25 August 2010 at 1:25 pm #44104Scotland was our 3rd choice striker and for the time being Franco is 3rd choice so as stats show Franco adds more to our squad.
Di Santo might be joining from Chelsea this week :)

martinez played rodellega and boselli up front last night ,at least in the first half, but played gomez, mcarthur, watson and hendry tight in the middle behind them, no width at all,
in fact hendry and mcarthur played a holding type roll behind watson and gomez it was like a 4 -2 – 2 -2 formation ,very strange indeed.25 August 2010 at 2:05 pm #44108bobby will play a 4 3 3
25 August 2010 at 2:46 pm #44113Must admit, being linked with a 33 year old West Ham cast-off soes not exactly enthuse me, I have to say.
25 August 2010 at 8:10 pm #44141Any International with the top level experience that he has is very welcomed in my view. Maybe with Di Santo also, Kamikaze Martinez maybe has decided that one up top doesn’t work. Still unhappy at the moment but we will just have to see. The fairytale ending could just yet be in sight. That signing and the Di Santo rumour is a glimmer of hope for me.
25 August 2010 at 9:10 pm #44148He’s 2 years younger than the carrot headed midfielder from OT who is running the show at most premier league games he plays in.
Age has no boundaries “if tha good inuff” :oFrom Matlock to ManU
What a journey!25 August 2010 at 9:40 pm #44151if he scores five or six goals for us he will be a good signing no one else looks like they can score
