I was brought up as a Utd fan by my family. Then a friend of the family took me to a Latics game and the rest is history. Made the choice when I was about 7 or 8 that I was a Latics fan.

Family moved to Salford when I was six. I was under a lot of pressure to support United and I went with my mates to a couple of games but it never really got me.

I discovered Latics through my uncle who was a ref and the first game I went to was Enfield in about 1973-4. The game that swung it was beating Sheff Weds in the cup at Springfield in 1977 – proper atmosphere, aggression and a Maurice Whittle goal. I’d never felt anything like it.

The next season we were in the league and for the next 15 years I hardly missed a game… then I went to work abroad. Came back for me dad’s funeral for a week and got a game in – Exeter at home!!

My town, my team and what a wonderful time we’ve all had. And long may it continue….
