woodgate is a top defender who has been unlucky he would get in top 4 team if he was fit enough.

even in his injured state he is better than alcaraz and caldwell put together.

And I bet his wage is bigger than Alcaraz and Caldwell’s put together.

I’d lie on a treatment table for a season for half of what he gets paid (or maybe three quarters of what he gets paid).

Alcaraz and Caldwell were outstanding at Stoke when Woodgate was sat injured in the stands.
Wouldn’t touch him with a barge pole.
Had a big bag of dace and grayling from the Welsh Dee yesterday, the 16th.

Am sure his racial intolerance will inhere him to the Wigan population !

For all sorts of reasons I wouldn’t touch him with a bargepole. I would like to see Bobby continue his policy of buying relatively young hungry players.

Any older players would have to show they were fit and up for it. Woodgate is neither.

Not very outstanding at sunderland were they and on numerous occasions during the season, thats why we were in the bottom 3 for almost an entire season because they were oustanding. if we dont strengthen at centre half we will struggle again

Strengthen & Jonathon Woodgate…..never thought I would see those 2 words in the same debate.

The thing is IF we signed Woodgate then Alcaraz & Caldwell would still be the centre backs coz Woodgate would be on the treatment table for 3/4 of the season.

I would say that whoever signs JW would do so on a pay as you play contract. Well any club with sense that is

standish i think you may find as of this moment in time woodgates wages are NIL – and i believe anyone that does sign him will be on a pay as you play basis from now on -nobody will take him on any other contract so that would mean he could be a decent signing.

arky you say caldwell and alcaraz were
“outstanding at Stoke when Woodgate was sat injured in the stands.”
both of them were awful in the first half and we were lucky not to be 2 or 3 goals down at half time – they were also worse than awful the week before in the west ham come back –
they are without doubt the WORST defensive partnership we have had in a long time(including before we got promotion) – and we will not progress to regular mid table security until martinez sorts the problem out.

I agree with you that we need more strength at centre half, but I don’t think Woodgate is the man to fit into Martinez’s buying policy and ethos, which I personally agree with. If we could get an experienced centre half with good leadership qualities and fitness record like De Zeuw (or Henchoz, who I think was a good buy for that one season), then maybe. But I don’t think Woodgate is that man.

Personally I think the reason we were in the bottom three for most of the season was a lack of goals, caused by a lack of attacking intent.

Yet both Martinez and the CEO have stated that buying that kind of player at that stage in his career on that kind of contractual basis is not the way the club is looking to go.

That was in answer to questions about the chances of signing Michael Owen and Owen Hargreaves but I would suggest that Woodgate fits into the category too.
