Now I’ve calmed down a little after that shocker last night it’s time to think what could have been done to change it by the manager.
If you were Capello, how would you have changed it last night?
Me, I’d have subbed Heskey for SWP and gone 4-5-1 with SWP and Lennon on the wings and Gerrard just behind Rooney. If Rooney didn’t improve with that then he’s off too and Defoe on. If Gerrard didn’t improve then maybe switch him for Joe Cole.
I don’t know, but I don’t think Rooney should start the next game. Capello really needs to make a statement of intent that he’s going to still select on form. Rooney hasn’t scored for England in a competitive game since god knows when, and all the media hype is about which player should partner him. I say start with Crouch and either have Defoe with him or Joe Cole playing off him just in front of midfield. It’s a crime that Cole hasn’t even played yet – he’s arguably our most technical player and he would have tore Algeria apart last night.
One thing I can take from the match is that Barry definitely deserves that starting place – he was probably our best player and Gerrard should partner him in the middle and Lampard should stick to the bench. SWP is taking part in the wrong international tournament, he’s a much better athlete than he is a footballer and I don’t understand why he got on the plane in the first place. It certainly wasn’t through merit!
Agree about SWP’s form last season not being worthy of selection, but when he’s come on in the last couple of games for England he’s had an impact (in my opinion).

He’s had an impact all right – the number of times he’s ran straight into the full backs when running forward is testament to that.

If he was a) running and b) going forward then he clearly had a bigger impact than most of the other players! ;)

Aye that’s a fair cop. Still, Joe Cole would have offered a lot more; I’m still convinced that Johnson would have been much better for England than SWP as well.
Right now there’s probably a few players that could have offered more. Hindsight is a great gift.
I can’t help thinking that Capello made a monumental mistake dropping Green. It sends the message to all the players that one mistake and you’re out. The result is a very nervy, tense team that avoids making mistakes, but does absolutely nothing and takes no risks. I think that’s part of what we saw last night.

By all accounts James was always the first choice, but wasnt 100% for the first game. We can all read what we want into this, but those players are the ones responsible for the results.
It was funny to hear at the start of the tournament that the press were praising Capello for his workman like ethos, strict rules etc were bonding the team perfectly, then at the weekend it became too much, too strict, players were bored etc… they should be out on the training field working on basic passes etc……
What has the reaction been to the England results in your neck of the wood Edinburgh?
I’ve had a few messages from people I know north of the border, ranging from the expected p!ss takes to a couple actually supporting England (both from the blue side of Glasgow).
Not been the most favourable pro English reaction to be honest, most people either hate England or dont watch footy, with one or two exceptions, I think people would prefer us to get knocked out in the second phase.
The scots laugh at the English results like we do for the French results.

I suppose that reaction’s to be expected, and there would be a lot down here who would react in exactly the same way if it was the other way round.
Probably the only time we’d get a sizeable support from Scotland would be if we were playing the Republic Of Ireland, and even that would be confined to the ‘God Save The Queen’ brigade.
You get this every time England play, a lot of idiots will jump in the bandwagon and buy t-shirts etc. But they do know it hurts them not to be at the world cup. They really are a nation divided.
