Fair enough, we haven’t really got rid of any keepers or centre halves but personally I think that this team might be easier on the eye than Whelan’s current Championship cast-off XI, and a better bet for staying up. Of course, he’d be £100m worse off, though.
Carroll
Chimbonda DeZeuw Webster Baines
Valencia Palacios Cattermole McCulloch
Ellington HeskeySubs: Bullard, Taylor, Roberts
23 August 2009 at 9:49 pm #6251Webster???? He wouldn’t have got in our 1997 Championship side, I bet Cribley now is quicker than him.

But then we’d only have 8 players :?

I think you will find there would still be eleven players in the team. No subs I admit, but most of that team played under Jewell and he didn’t really use subs anyway.
23 August 2009 at 10:05 pm #6260I know Horc doesn’t rate Valencia, but a five-man midfield of McCulloch Palacios, Cattermole, Bullard and Valencia would be as good as any in the division.
All academic now, of course. Still at least there must be loads in that war chest by now…

War chest, mmmmm, If only he knew where the key was.

Chimbonda De Zeeuw Bramble Figueroa
Valencia Palacios Bullard N’Zogbia
Roberts Ellington
Subs: Filan, Jackson, Baines, McCulloch, Cattermole, Rodallega, Heskey.
For me, that would be our best (most recent) XI with the subs.
24 August 2009 at 4:39 pm #6354If we are talking the team that could have been, with a mix of departed players and what we have, in my opinion, I’d have liked to have seen:
Pollitt
Chimbonda Boyce Bramble Edman
Valencia Cattermole Bullard Palacios
Roberts Rodallega
SUBS: Kirkland, Scharner, Baines, McCulloch, Ellington, Figueroa, Gomez
I think that team would pretty much have everything. Skill, strength, creativity, toughness. And the bench has everything as well. I’ve been realistic and not picker De Zeeuw or Jackson, due to their ages.
Personally, I would pick Edman in front of Figueroa, any day. The partnership of Roberts and Rodallega could have been fantastic, as well.Still, we’ve got £40 million, or so in the ‘Warchest’. We’ll spend some money, soon…………
24 August 2009 at 11:18 pm #6387Not for me Vat, i really rate Figueroa and think he should definitely be in the team instead of Edman, unless you put Edman at left back and then figs at centre back? I don’t know, but here would be my 11.
Kirkland
Chimbonda Bramble Boyce Figueroa
Valencia Bullard Palacios N’Zogbia
Rodallega Heskey
Subs: Pollitt, Scharner, Edman, McCulloch, Cattermole, Roberts, Ellington :D
Wadda we think?
25 August 2009 at 12:26 am #6396The likes of McCulloch, Heskey, Bullard, Palacios, Chimbonda and Cattermole all wanted to leave…what are we meant to do chain them to the stadium and tell them they cant go? Valencia was given the chance to play for the biggest club around and we were being offered 16 million… what are we meant to say???
We need to face facts in that we are not and never will be a big draw for players. If someone, Palacios for example, has a good season for us he will want to move on. He will have an agent telling him he can treble his cash and thats that. For the first time in a while we appear to be looking at the long term, bigger picture; a manager on a 3 year deal signing young players and being given free reign to do it how he wants to do it. Its going to take time to settle down.
We have played 3 games of the season and we have people on messageboards (who i would imagine have seen the grand total of 0 of those games??) clambering for Andy Webster, Nathan Ellington and Roy Carroll back. Only in Wigan eh?
A sense of realism would be nice. Mind you, when i saw Ryan Taylors name on the list i realised it might have been a wind up???
25 August 2009 at 1:09 am #6397That’s not my point. Would you rather see our current team or the team above?
