Did I miss something, or did we actually play a 5-5-0 formation?

We play with five in midfield yet we always seem short when the opposition have the ball.

…our defending from set pieces is a joke. We had 5 at the back you wouldn’t have thought so we were so open it was frightening.

Or is it just another case of ‘don’t let the facts get in the way of being negative’?

We started with Jones on the left wing, then when the game was lost the tactical genius that is our manager put Figs as an extra centre half and put Jones at left back. Neither of our managers formations came close to working, a bit of a pattern developing here me think’s.

Northern did you go to the game??? If so you would have seen our so called centre forward chasing around after the ball in our half. So in answer to your question it was more a 5-5-0 than a 5-4-1.

I would say it was 5-5-0 for the majority of the game because Sammon was doing Gomez’s job for him !! The back 4/5 was all over the place at times !! I think Martinez has started to confuse the players as well as us fans ! Uncle Dave has accepted our fate this season as early as 9 games in and if I had known of his negativity pre season I probably wouldn’t have forked out for a season ticket because that really does change things !

i feel sorry for sammon, not the type of player to play up front on his own, needs a strike partner, and once again a masterful use of subs from martinez

What I meant was I don’t look forward to going on any more because of what Martinez has done ! I said last season that if he stayed I would not renew and pick the odd games out to go on. I gave him the benefit of the doubt because things did improve slightly but he has just fucked it all up again ! You wouldn’t keep going back to a restaurant week after week if it kept serving up shit food would you !! Four of us come from Leyland every home game taking it in turns to drive and none of us can get excited pre kick off any more. The mood is always down beat and it wasn’t like that pre Martinez. He has taken the team backwards and his tactical nous is enigmatic to say the least !!

filmoss that is exactly how me and my mates feel (One of them has watched more Latics games in the league than anyone else. I think apart from a break when he was in hospital. I think he has only missed a couple of games, League, FA cup, and League Cup.since they got in the League.) As you say Saturday comes and it’s like having to go to work  I know that if I missed a couple of games I would stop going, as at the moment it’s just habit that keeps me going. On Saturday walking home in the rain and cold I got to thinking that as the next two home games or on the TV If the weather is like this, I’ll stay at home and watch it there.
I’ve been watching football, at all levels, for over 50 years and the football I’m watching at the moment is the worst.I’ve seen. My old games teacher had more idea than Martinez.

Mr Moss; don’t forget me from Lozzi Hall & Horc from Chorley !!!
We are fookin die hards, and even we are questioning our sanity for turning up come what may !

Best thing on Saturday, were seeing’t “Bird wit nice arse”; but after all these years, even that’s gone a bit east & west.

Agree with all those comments. As you can see from my username I decided enough was enough after his first season when I sat there totally bored and frustrated with what I was seeing on the pitch. I remember at the end of the season trying to remember which games I’d enjoyed. The season was summed up by the poor DVD to mark the season. OK, ‘We Did It 3 Times’, but really that’s all we did. The DVD reminded me to abstain from attending until either he goes or results improve. I too used to make a 70 mile round trip for the games but I can find better things to spend that money on now.

Alasdair, I cant vouch for how you and Horc feel though ! You always seem keen to get on the ground whereas we are invariably late on and early away, that’s how it is these days !

Yep, I went to the game. Usual 320 mile round trip.

Our centre forward (I assume you mean Sammon?), looked as though he started out on the right. Then after 60 seconds went off all over the place. Second half he seemed to be more central and was clearly p155ed off when he was subbed.

If you want to see centre forwards chasing the ball in their own half look no further than Wayne Rooney!

Our system really didn’t work at all yesterday. It looked like we started with a 5-2-3 with Jones and Stam presumably meant to push into midfield. How we actually played is anyone’s guess.

I just presumed that Figs was playing his usual game of run around out of position and lose my man
