Just been watching the youth team beat Stoke 3 nil and must say I was very impressed. They use the same system as the 1st team 1 up front, but the 3 central midfielders really got forward well to support the striker. We seem to have some very good young players at the club who are comfortable on the ball.
Oh and only the keeper was wearing gloves, hard as well!

Here’s something to think about….the one up front system, well, it’s not Bobby’s. No really it’s not. Other teams play it – in fact most successful team play it. So you see, it does work, it’s just that it isn’t working for first team at present.

i think you’ll find Standish that most of us are aware that a system of playing 1 up front can work

At Latics however we have seen 18 months of it not working, our manager persisting in fitting square pegs in round holes, him try approx 5 different centre forwards in the lone striker role – none of whom have the attributes to play that role, and a complete inflexibility to change his system during a game when it quite clearly isn’t working

Yes I know that. I’m not saying it’s working, merely that the system was not invented by Martinez.

‘Most of us’ Tyldesley, but not all.

There’s at least one post on this every couple of days stating that one up front doesn’t work. With the right players, it does. You know that, I know that, but there are some that clearly do not.

And…if 442 was the answer, as all our budding Mourinho’s on here claim it to be, why is everyone else not playing it?

Steve Bruce did at Chelsea and won 3 nil

          #52855

Steve Bruce isn’t EVERYONE else though, is he?

Just as Roberto isn’t the ONLY one playing the way we play.

We could do with some reading lessons on this forum

just passing through and stating that Steve Bruce played 442 at Chelsea and won 3 nil

I think you will find that is factually correct

            #52858

I didn’t say it wasn’t factually correct, did I. Rag all to do with the topic, though.

Can’t you pass through a bit quicker next time?

Bolton do!,Elmander + Davies not doing them any harm is it?.Blackpool neither all Premier ship teams change their forward formations if the need arises during a game ie falling a couple of goals behind or in desperate need of 3 pts.
All except Bobbys team as Tyldesleylatic mentions!.

              #52866

All premiership teams change their formation when things aren’t working with 100% success, do they??? Well, aren’t you the ever so informed – and certainly not prone to generalisation – one?

Well, go on then… Give me some proof – times of formation changes, before and after scores – of all these ingenious tactical changes so that I can check it out please?

And just for the record – if you ever bothered to read properly, a recurring malaise on this forum, apparently – I do agree that we should mix up our style of play. I just don’t resort to glib, made up statements to back up my argument.

              Off you go..

Yes, and we have played one up front against Chelsea and won 3-1 under Martinez, and played 4-4-2 against them under Bruce and lost. The formation means jack unless you’re playing well and the players are up for it.
