I would say that under Bruce the team as a whole had more balance, and looked better as an attacking force, yes. OK he had Valencia who gave quality right sided width, but Martinez has Moses who could do the same.
If we’re playing 4-5-1. (we’re not playing 4-3-3 as some suggest), I’d rather see it the way Bruce played it with real width. Take Zog example, and assuming we had any sort of centre forward, Zog gets the ball down left flank beats full back, gets to byline, we should have the centre forward at near post, the right sided winger on far post and the advanced midfielder(s), say Watson, bursting through the middle. Because Zog and others aren’t cutting inside all the time you’re giving him more space to run through. Thats what Tottenham did to us in the 9-1 win with Lennon torturing Edman.
A tactical overhaul may benefit the team, I agree, and such a thing could improve the number of chances we create, goals we score etc. However, on an individual level, N’Zogbia has improved manifold this season whilst being played ‘out of position’.
It could well be the case that if we played with more width and balance then we would be a better team, but I think putting N’Zogbia back on the left flank would be detrimental to him as an individual because of the reasons I said before.
