Possibly the best crowd of the season tonight.
15 July 2017 at 3:08 am #160441Great opening post after we’ve just drawn with and matched a strong Liverpool team.
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!15 July 2017 at 3:08 am #160442Possibly the best crowd of the season tonight.75 less than Thursday
You’re probably not wrong Don…Blackburn on 28/10 should run it close though.

Against a very strong LFC team we more than held our own and the U23’s in the 2nd half showed we have strength in depth.
Two good halves of football without Grigg, Powell, McDonald, Morsey, Kellett and Daniels.15 July 2017 at 3:20 am #160446Great opening post after we’ve just drawn with and matched a strong Liverpool team.Played bloomin well tonight, and with a lot of players missing. Shot ourselves in the foot, with another defensive mix up. (But now is the time to get these out of the way!)
A draw against a virtually full strength Liverpool side is a tremendous boost. We won’t face such pace and sharpness in League one…I’m convinced we will have a great season and be there or there abouts. Mark Lawrenson sounded impressed on Liverpool TV and was praising us. Said Bogle won’t be offside as much against League One defences as they won’t be as quick to catch him out. Let’s hope so.Exciting.
15 July 2017 at 3:50 am #160447Great opening post after we’ve just drawn with and matched a strong Liverpool team.Sorry JR but I thought I was being positive as crowd of nearly 13,000 for a warm up game is brilliant but it’s just a pity that there are not more like you and me who will watch Latics whoever we play like Middlesbrough’s youth team which will be a competitive match. Blackpool too in the league cup. Where will the fans be for these matches?

At home. I find the fact that a cup match is played after one league game has been played, quite laughable. I always have. I hope we play fringe players in the league cup, and a youth side in the micky mouse cup. League is priority and FA Cup, I wouldn’t mind a little run.

And personally I’d be OK with a trip to Wembley for the so-called Micky Mouse Cup (though to be fair I struggle knowing its name now, and the League Cup sounds too much like Kangaroo Cup for my liking).
And there are strict rules as to who we can field – you can’t just play the youth team.

It was almost 6,000 less than the friendly against Liverpool last July

But that was a weekend afternoon, not a wet Friday night

True, but it was also a weekend where Man Utd also played here, so supporters had two chances to see top class players, whereas this year it was Liverpool or nothing. Plenty folk said they would go to one or the other, but not both. Whilst 12,000+ is a cracking attendance for a friendly, it is also a sign that the optimism of last July when Will Grigg was on fire and we’d pissed League 1 is not as prevalent.

Each to their own. But I won’t bother.
And as for not being able to play a ‘youth team’, well 7 or 8 changes from the strongest previous line up should be alright. Getting Morsy or Powell crocked by a young lad from Boro in front of a 3000 crowd and missing 4 or 5 crucial league games isn’t ideal.
A day out at Wembley playing someone like Southend in front of 40,000 has no appeal to me I’m afraid.
