Looking forward to next weeks when I might actually remember some of what you’re talking about. What with my earliest World Cup memory being 1994.
That 82 world cup sticks in my mind due to collecting panini stickers for the book you get from newsagents I think that is when the WC became commercialised ie FIFA started coining it inI remember collecting world cup 78 stickers, but 82 was the first real Panini world cup, on a slightly different not did you see you can now make your own albums up and sticker design…. I do admit to collecting them for my lad this year :)
Loved the 1990 world cup for obvious reasons, but I think we have been 20 years worse off because of the expectations of that tournament gave us.
Started collecting them for the nephew who then ended up with his Dad buying him one meaning I have to collect them myself.
Well, that’s my excuse anyway :)
Italia ’90 – “Gazza’s boot not quite connecting with that cross”
I don’t remember that. You’re not getting it mixed up with Euro 96 where Gazza’s boot didn’t quite connect with that cross are you?
My most vivid memory from Italia 90 is in the first game when some Argentinian forward burst through near the half way line one guy tried to foul him & missed, a second tried to foul him & missed & then a third guy came in & made no mistake. Poetry in motion
I think this youtube clip describes it as the greatest tackle in world cup history & I find it hard to disagree:

As the ref awarded a goal kick to West Germany, technically it wasn’t a foul!! ;)

You might be right! Told you my memory was shit.
Might have been Waddles’s shot that hit the post in extra time. The again, they hit the post too, if I recall correctly. But I probably don’t. ;)
World Cup 78 sticks in my mind as the one that I remember following throughout with some fantastic goals and games and a great final between Argentina and Holland.
Remember the ticker tape or ripped up paper celebrations and remember these happening at springy parkAlly McLeoud and that daft song that still gets chanted today “where on the march with ally’s army” and the ridiculous assumption they were going to win the thing.Everybody believed it and most english got behind them as England failed to reach the 78 World Cup and went 12’years without appearing in the tournament.
