My thoughts on the whole saga going on down at the DW evolve around a couple of subjects. The fact that Wigan Athletic have been totally insistent on selling off the best assets every year kills the team’s morale. No matter who they replace them with. The cascade effect from that is :- every single year since about 2007 The Latics have started the season with a practically new team every season. By the time they have had time to gel the season is ending but twice in the last 3 years it has caught them out.

I get the hysteria around Caldwell and the new regime and clinging on to the Martinez style, (which was crap btw) but yet again next season they will start with a dismantled team and playing strikers from Scotland etc. I can only see one outcome next season. Another dog fight. Whelan’s countless money grabbing has totally de-stabilised the club which he and many of you say he has made sustainable when the upshot is in reality he has lined his profits and sucked the ‘family’ aspect out of the club.

Whelan’s countless money grabbing has totally de-stabilised the club

On the contrary, it has ensured we are financially sound.

And if you, and others, believe Whelan has “lined his pockets”, even after having read the published and audited accounts which need to pass scrutiny by the FA and League (I presume you have done this?), then you are deluded.

Dave whelan has kept the club on a sound footing for year so we are in league one for next season it won’t be the first time we have be there I hope it’s the last. I would rather be in our position rather than Q.P.Rs or Portsmouth a few years ago so if whelan has made any money it’s only what he’s put in in the first place. I can’t wait for the new season to start get behind the boy and see what happens.

He’s not deluded George, he’s thick. He’s had the truth about Whelan pointed out to him umpteen times but, to paraphrase, there’s none so blind as those that can’t read.

Frankly, George, I’m surprised you bothered replying.

Ok, we’ve had 2 relegations in 3 seasons and we’re back in the league where Dave Whelan found us. However, despite his “countless money grabbing”, in the last 20 years we’ve seen moments we never thought possible and club, although in the same division is now a totally different one from that he took over. Off the pitch, stadium, support wise and financially the club is much healthier than it was in 1995.

Not too bad for all that money grabbing…the important thing now, is that Gary Caldwell is given reasonable time and resources to get the job right and take us back up the league

          #142149

Yeah very sustainable, That’s why we can’t pay transfer fee’s for anyone and keep selling any player on any kind od decent wage. All those hundreds of millions that were made and now all of a sudden wages can no longer be paid.

:- I said Dave Whelan would walk if Latics weren’t promoted within the parachute payments and every asset will be sold – I was right

:- I said the club would end up in a far worse state than when he arrived, it’s starting to look as if i am right.

:- When it becomes obvious that David Sharpe can’t get the club back Granddad will tell him to take what he can and walk

:- Wigan Athletic will eventually get to the stage where they can’t afford the rent and will eventually get kicked out of the stadium. Anyone who thinks this isn’t possible because Uncle Dave said they will always play there, long term lease etc blah blah. He has never screwed any business over that doesn’t turn a profit has he?

:- Ground sharing at Leigh Sports Village looking forward to local derbies with FC United and Stockport.

We are a league above where Whelan found us and in a far better state financially.

Yosser, we can afford transfer fees we just choose not to pay the millions some clubs ask for or the inflated wage some players demand.

So things didn’t go right on the pitch, but off it we are probably one of the best run clubs there is.

Correct. Except he’s lost about £50m. Still, what’s that between friends eh, is what some of our ‘fans’ will say?

Agree with you on the rest, though.

Not being funny Egg but are we in a better financial state than before Mr Whelan? In which way? Money in the bank? Assets? Debt control?

Re-wind to 1994, before Mr. Whelan.
Our crowds and league position were similar to Darlington, Scarborough and Hereford.
We’ve risen through the leagues along with Fulham and have experiences that most of our fans could only dream of.
Even if you do believe that we aren’t in a better financial state would you preferred to stay in the lower leagues and not lived through the past 10-15 years?

By the way, it is obvious that we are in a better financial state now.

I presume you’re fishing Yosser, but I’ll humour you and bite:

                  • Yes is it very sustainable. You buy young players, develop them, and sell them on for a profit. It’s how Crewe and to a lesser extent, Middlesbrough have operated for years. If/when the new training ground and academy is finished, this can be used as a farm for young players as we simply do not have the resources to buy a new squad every season.
                  • When have wages not been paid? I think you’re confusing Wigan with someone like Leeds or Portsmouth who were poorly financially managed.
                  • The hundreds of millions have gone on the running of the club, servicing debts, and paying players’ wages (all of which available to read the club’s published accounts)
                  • Whelan walked because of his monumental cock-up in appointing and attempting to support Mackay. Nothing to do with not winning promotion.
                  • Whelan hasn’t made a profit from the club. What he got from his association with the club was the chance to get in front of the TV cameras at the drop of a hat, and once he’d made himself look silly and nobody wanted his views anymore, that’s when he decided to quietly slip away into the background.
                  • And if he has left with parachute payments, no wonder all those players left in January because they obviously weren’t being paid.
                  • In what way is the club in a worse state than when he arrived? I am genuinely baffled by that statement.
                  • How is David Sharpe supposed to ‘get the club back’? He’s not the manager, nor a player. He’ll be going nowhere as buyers aren’t exactly queuing up and there’s too much Whelan money invested into the club to merely walk away.
                  • Do Wigan Athletic actually pay rent? I’m sure they don’t pay anything for using the stadium. The stadium is owned by the Whelan family so why would they throw the football club out while they still own both? If the club is ever sold, they will invariably include the stadium within that sale.

There’s 2 sides to the argument imo.

You can’t ever take away the memories of the last 15 years that 2000 odd people ever thought could happen in their, mostly, mashed up minds. It has been incredible and I didn’t think football could ever make you feel that way. One person was responsible for this and our shiny new stadium.

The other side is, we (Mr Whelan) sold off everything with value in January, after some insane decisions and then he himself fooked off and left us with his 23yo grandson in charge, when all could probably have been avoided.

However, I would never give up the former for the latter to never take place so we’ll just have to get on with it and hope we can get back. Otherwise my son and his generation will never forgive us if they only ever have that real shite I grew up watching in the lower leagues.

                    #142177

I get absolutely sick of hearing “we sold off all our top players to line the pockets of Mr Whelan”. How many of the said players wanted to stay when they knew there was interest from other clubs?. Never saw the likes of Macarthur or N’zogbia say “actually I would like to stay and play for Wigan. So Mr Whelan is guilty now because greedy agents are looking to get their clients dream moves for massive wage increases is he?. For fook sake the man offered Chimbonda an improved contract after 6 months only to be shafted by the gobshite who handed in a transfer request while still in his kit. If you want to lay blame Yozzer look elsewhere other than the man who has transformed his club better than any oil baron or oligarch.
