whilst some may not view this as a laughing matter, i like the humour in the last paragraph …

History suggests that the top flight’s great survivors should not be written off too quickly. Wigan also suffered eight successive defeats, in 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 and lived. But a light has gone out since then and the switch may be hard to find.

All hinges around whether Whelan will keep his nerve and, if he doesn’t, what additional resources, if any, will he make available in Janury to a new bloke.

Also, if Bob goes after the Blackburn game, what chance does a new manager have in the next 7 games….

I have been a bit reluctant to post anything on here as it looks like good sensible debate has gone out of the Window….anyway:

Problem is that Whelan has just got the club out of debt (hasn’t he??) So why would he put the club back in debt to purchase additional resorces?

Our other main problem is we can’t defend….we need a partnership (been mentioned already on here) like we had with Hencoz & DeZeew….Bramble & Sharner. I watched the game on Sunday and thought we were the better team. We were the better team against Fulham and Newcastle. Its very frustrating as we never seem to be able to defend anything. We looked like a threat going forward and it was the first glimmer of how we play 4-3-3 when we have the ball and are attacking. I think the reason we missed our chances is that we have zero confidence…and probably hitting the post so many times looks like we will never score. I would also bring back Boselli and push him to do better…seems we are going soft on players.

I think we need 2 central defenders who can speak the native language and can communicate. I would dump Gohouri, Alcaraz and Figs and bring in Van Anolt at left back. Play Watson and jones with McArthur as holding midfielder and play Rodders, Moses and DiSanto…I would bollock DiSanto (Bruce/Jewell style) as I think he has it in him to be a great player, but thinks he is Lionel Messi at times…

…I feel sorry for Bob and I am a supporter of Bob but he needs to be screaming at his players in the way Jewell and Bruce would have done. I am Lightside but have to admit, I think he should go if we don’t pick up the three points against Blackburn as something needs to change within the club if we are to make it to next season in the Prem.

our defence was suspect last season and should have been overhauled in the summer. a centre back and a left back should have been number one priority, quite simply, the defenders at we have are not good enough,no matter what combination we use, imo boycie should be playing at centre back,

I pretty much agree with all you say, especially the bit about Boselli who, granted, didn’t have the best of times first time round but showed glimpses that he is a class act. Sure, he missed chances but he was there to miss them in the first place.

I disagree with what you say about Di Santo though. Not good enough in my mind. Can’t score, showboats, thinks he can play like his pixellated counterpart on FIFA 12 (along with Rodallega) and basically runs and chases around with very little end product.

I have to disagree appley re: putting Boycey in at CB.

He’s been fantastic for us at RB going forward and 95% of the time defending.. So to take him out and put in Stam who is nothing short of a rubbish midfielder would present another problem in itself.

Has anyone noticed how often the CB’s get pulled out of position to cover wingers running down left and right wings (mostly Figs) when facing a counter attack, which leaves us low on numbers when the ball gets put in the box??

I think its one of our most serious problems in the defence and the only thing I could suggest putting aside buying a new defensive line is pressing the point that the holding midfielder needs to get further back when it is the right time and if a CB comes out to defend a wing the other winger needs to come in and take over that Central position.

All in all some players seem reluctant to over lap and cover positions when it is needed.

May be its MartineZ philosophy to blame , I dont know?!!??!

But we need to learn to switch between a defensive attitude and then when we have control of the ball go back to the “good” attacking football we have been playing…

But hey what do I know… lets just sack the manager switch to 442 and everything else will work itself out :pinch:

point taken about boycie, bad when our rb is also our best cb, just highlights how few opitions we have, and figueroa is imo the worse left back in the prem, caught out of position time and time again and is so one footed its untrue

I’d love to know what the Dutch lad has done to upset Martinez. I understand there is no truth in the rumour that he is injured.

He looked OK against Everton, quite promising. A mystery.

I stated this in another thread and still stand by it – the only time our defence has looked anything like solid this season was for a 20 minute spell v spurs, in the second half before gohouri got sent off, and we need to shore it up again at the moment which every manager in football does when they are losing games and conceeding goals, and that is a major problem because martinez is either, to incompetent, stupid or stubborn to see the problem staring him in the face.

We have to go 5 at the back and i would suggest against blackburn a back 3 of boyce, caldwell and figeuroa, with stam and PVA playing the getting up and down wing back roll, then play macarthur, diame and jones in midfield, i would even consider thomas instead of the macarthur, either one plays a holding roll, up front moses and A.N.OTHER, i see no reason not to give salmon a chance as di santo or rodalegga are not breaking any pots.

This system allows cover at both full back positions as well as in the middle and would give diame(the only one who looks dangerous at the moment)room to push up with the front 2 and the wing backs.

Martinez’s biggest fault is his stubborness to a point of arrogance which is hilighted by the fact he will/has never changed or waivered his system despite it clearly not working, and everybody who watches us either light or dark side can see this.

He has actually plaqyed that way before, though I can’t remember him ever doing it from the start of a game. 3-5-2 is a good system IMO, though it still relies on sensible, competemt players, especially at wing-back. Worth a shot though.
