point taken about boycie,bad when our rb is also our best cb, just highlights how few opitions we have, and figueroa is imo the worse left back in the prem, caught out of position time and time again and is so one footed its untrueIts not just Figueroa. It was Boyce who was hopelessly out of position for Fulham’s opening goal the other week.
He also got skinned for Wolves’s 3rd goal on SundayThe fact of the matter is that all a team seems to need to do to score against Latics is to directly run at the back line with any sort of pace. When an opposition does that they all (& I include Boyce in that) look like fishes out of water.
As for Boyce at right back I think Steve Bruce (who for whatever else may be thought about him knows how to get the best out of defenders) once said that whilst he was okay to cover at right back he lacked something specific (can’t for the life of me remember what it was – may have been pace) to be successful in that role in the top flight but that he had all the attributes to be a successful centre halfI think part of the problem is not necessarily the full backs, its the wingers(wide midfielders) not helping out so the full backs get exposed.
Successful 4-4-2 formations would have the right back/winger working in combination both in defence and attack. Our 4-3-3 / 4-5-1 or everyone chase it formation leaves us exposed at the back.
As mentioned on this board in other posts we don’t have successful partnerships anywhere on the pitch.
Maybe thats why Figs is looking ropy since Martinez formation came in cos Hugos never there to help him?
