It’s not that he was fantastic, just that we have been so used to the ridiculously slow, patient build-up that to see someone pick the ball up in the centre of the field and drive at defences has surprised most of the crowd! For too long we’ve only had N’Zogbia doing this but from wide positions where he is easy to nullify. Drive at a defence from the middle of the park and you should have options either side of you and another to just go on your own and shoot. That type of player behind the front man is what we’ve been crying out for.

I was very pleasantly surprised at Di Santo because I wasn’t led to believe that that was his position. It was a promising first appearance for him and I can stop clamouring for Gomez to be picked there now :)

To be honest going into this game I would of been happy with a draw but seeing has they had a man sent off within the first 30 minutes we really should’ve taken advantage but there keeper (who I’ve never heard of, thought he was a reserve keeper), had the game of his life. Also, that Boselli miss was terrible. :o

There keeper was brilliant, lucky us

It’s 2 points lost for sure, almost everyone on this site expected a Wigan victory.

If you read the thread where folk made predictions for this game you’ll find only 3 out of 10 predicted a win and one of them was you.

        5 out if 10 actually predicted 1-1.

        Bloody clever us Wiganers.

Me, I put money in 0-0.

i must agree with both of you here -i thought he was as out and out striker -but when he came on and started to get involved it was obvious to every man and his dog (except yosser-hughes)he looks a decent ball player-his passing was quick and direct and the run/cross for boselli was sublime.
he wanted the ball all the time and made runs when he didnt have it – something none of our current squad do – its early days yet but this lad could be the catalyst the midfield needs.
one downer for me again yesterday though in a generally good performance, apart from up front, was figueroa –
i along with most others blamed diame for their goal – but after seeing sky /MOD later, figueroa never even tried to get back into position to cover and this was not isolated.

He’s alreet yosser.. He just isn’t being deluded and thinking a player is a world beater because he played decent for half hour. Not like he scored either.

To be fair Jimmy, I don’t think anybody has said he looks like a world beater.

Even Yosser must admit that it came as a pleasant shock to see two Wigan midfielders (him and Cleverley) actually moving off the ball, asking for it and doing something with it when they got it.

I was refereeing on Saturday & so have only seen the extended highlights on SKY which for once (as my wife is due to drop the new baby any day) I watched sober.

Anyway, my game finished about 20 past 4 & I checked the score on my phone & had the live text commentary on whilst driving back – i could see the stats of 64% possession, playing against 10 men, only 1 shot on target & of course 1-0 down & drew the conclusion that it was the same old guff I’ve been watching since Bobby took charge. This was confirmed when I read Bobby’s post match comments about being able to see a good team starting to gel

But – I watched the highlights & I have to say that for the first time since he took charge I actually agree with him. 1-1 at home against 10 men against a team I expect to finish mid-table does on the face of it look like 2 points dropped but I saw enough out there in the hour or so Sky show to be able, for the first time, to see some sort of progress.
I thought the defence looked solid, they all look comfortable on the ball. I thought the midfield chased & harried all game. Boselli (if you exclude his miss) looked like he was starting to adapt – held the ball up well & showed some good movement. I was very impressed by what little i saw of Di Santo & Cleverley. Other things are hard to put a finger on but i turned it off at the end having been quietly pleased & being able to see a team capable of showing some long term improvement

Still some things to moan about in that the midfield gives away possession too cheaply, too often and when they have given it away they seem to think its someone elses job to get it back. Also if a player has gone past them (as with Sunderland’s goal) they don’t bust a gut to try & get back at them. Also the team has had false dawns before but I can see a little chink of light at the end of the tunnel. I hope it continues

I seem to be getting some stick here. I will clarify my position, Di Santo, looked ok yeah, im not going to get a hard on though just because he chased the ball down a few times and put in one good cross. i think this town has forgotten what footballers are supposed to do.

Exactly. I agree with you. Understand what Griff means aswell about people being pleasantly surprised, I think he is right.. But it is the likes of my mate zoggysleftpeg saying he is arguably our best signing etc which I think is going over the top.

Thought this mon was purely a striker (Di santo)

He seemed to sit well in an attacking midfield role, imagine a midfielder who gets forward and is a threat in the box !!

The guy has tallent, just needs to connect with the rest of the team.

I think apart from Figgy looking ropey we have a decent team now.

I always think how much better the team would be if we still had Bainesy in there. We do need a new left back I agree. Think a 4-4-2 with the team we have could be class now we have options!

4-4-2 is not an option under Martinez  . `Bainesy’ packed his bags and buggered off 3 years ago!

I think he may give it a go soon ;) … Have a feeling. .. And I know this but he was clearly the best LB we ever had and had we kept hold our defence would now be solid :)
