Going to Anfield on the train on Saturday but what’s the best and easiest way to do it. Is it best to go to kirkdale and walk or get the soccer bus from Sandhills or just walk straight from lime street. Do you get charged for the soccer bus. I went to Everton the first season walked it from Kirkdale before and walked it back to lime street after the game and didn’t really enjoy the walk.
Please note I am a tight git and will have my 9 year old son with me.
Thanks in advance
11 February 2011 at 12:54 am #59074Easily the quickest and cheapest way is to get the Kirkby train from Wigan Wallgate or Pemberton and Orrell which are en route. Then change at Kirkby which is just a 30 yard walk along the same platform and get the Liverpool Central train which is usually waiting. 3 stops later get off at Kirkdale and then Anfield is about a 15 min walk. Goodison was 10 minutes. Coming back just make sure you are at Kirkdale for 5.30pm and you’ll be back in Wigan by 6.20pm after changing at Kirkby again.
Plenty of room and I took my 12 yr old, and you don’t have that crappy 1 hour journey from Wigan to Lime Street.
11 February 2011 at 12:55 am #59075Scoffy,
Lime Street is a bloody hike from Anfield!
Get off at Kirkdale and head up the road past the ‘MELROSE ABBEY’ pub (Westminster Road) that goes towards Goodison, past the Elm Tree pub. (That’s an alright pub, by the way)
At the end of this road, near the pub carpark at the junction, turn RIGHT as you face ‘THE BARLOW’ pub, opposite THE ELM TREE. Walk along this road and you want BRADEWELL STREET, one of your first left’s. Go straight up that and you’ll see the MCDONALDS in front of you, across the road.Turn RIGHT, walking past the ‘SIR THOMAS FROST’ Wetherspoons, and a very good chippy just along from it, as well! Across the road you will see ‘BRADLEY’S WINE BAR’ cross over here and carry on walking down the road and turn left up LUTON GROVE. Carry on straight up and it becomes FLORENCE STREET. Just walk straight up until you come to the end, and you’ll see STANLEY PARK, across from you. At the main road, you’ll see Goodison Park down to your left. Cross over and walk to your RIGHT, and when you get to the corner of the park, you are at the end of ANFIELD ROAD.
Obviously head up there, and you’ll see people heading to the ground.
Sounds more difficult than it is. 20 mins walk, I’d say.
Print off or write this down and you won’t go wrong.
Cheers.

11 February 2011 at 11:27 am #59094My only advice would be not to walk – especially with a 9 year old child with you.
Me & a mate attempted to walk back after on eof the games there a few seasons ago. Despite following the crowds 20 minutes later we were still feckin miles from the city centre, gave up, went in a pub over the road (full of Irish & Norwegian scousers watching United on the telly), had a couple of drinks, ordered a taxi & got back to the city centre that way – & it was still at least a 5 minute drive
If I can remember what i was like when i was 9 then your child will just start moaning they are tired, where are we? Are we nearly there yet? when are we going to get home? – unless they really like hiking through the dark & dingy streets of inner city liverpool
11 February 2011 at 12:27 pm #59097With those directions I’ve given, from Kirkdale Station, it’s not too bad.
Going to the match, it’s a bit uphill. But afterwards it’s all downhill, and you are back at Kirkdale in no time.
i wouldn’t under any circumstances, consider walking back into town to Lime Street. By the time you’d get there, you could be home.
PUBS FOR AWAY FANS?
I think ‘The Sandon’ is alright, on Walton Breck Road, down the road from the Kop end. The pubs immediately behind the Kop, get chocker. The Sandon has two floors and always seems to be plenty of room. I never wear a replica though, but sure I’ve seen Wigan colours in there before.
I’m heading in to town first though, personally.11 February 2011 at 12:46 pm #59098The Arkle (corner of the ground away end there will be tics fans in )Shankleys bar ok also ive been in there every year..Mosts pubs are ok on the red side..its just the scum on the other side.
Get the train into Lime st then a taxi you tight git!!
If youve paid £40 for a ticket you must have a bob or two.
Enjoy…
11 February 2011 at 2:16 pm #59120Sorry VAT – obviously I hadn’t read/seem the “get off at kirkdale” part of your post
11 February 2011 at 5:28 pm #59132Don’t go to Lime St. Its absolutely pointless use the Kirkby route unless you live in Bryn or Garswood.
11 February 2011 at 8:30 pm #59141Hey Scoffy mate,
Best way if you want a walk is to go the way that vats said its easy enough, but if you want to save the lad a walk get the train to sandhills and jumo the soccer bus.
If any of you are driving you can park upto half way down roxburgh street which is near kirkdale station!
11 February 2011 at 9:31 pm #59145:clap:
Thanks for the all the advice.Looks like i am going to go the way VAT as said catching the 11:52 from Wigan via Kirkby. There is a train at 17:14 then 18:14 coming back via Kirkby so i think it will be a nice gentle stroll back after the match.
As for my lad walking if we were going around Wigan or ASDA shopping he does nothing but moan, but he will walk bare footed over broken glass to get to football. Thats the result of taking him there since he was 18 months old might be hard work at the start but you get the rewards in the end.
Billlatic – paying £40 thats why i cant afford a bloody taxi
11 February 2011 at 11:26 pm #59154I will probably jump on that train at Pemberton, I have my 6 year old with me… oh and my 70 year old…

11 February 2011 at 11:51 pm #59159Me to..we going early to take in the early game in a pub .So i will need a taxi because i will have beer goggles on by 3pm..
11 February 2011 at 11:53 pm #59161I will probably jump on that train at Pemberton, I have my 6 year old with me… oh and my 70 year old…Pair of trainers? Coat?
12 February 2011 at 11:06 am #59197You’ll be there no time at all mate. I think there’s a train at five mins to 1.
