Yeh, we must have fans to fill our allocation because when we got to the final a few years ago we filled our allocation which should fill our stadium. I’m sure since then we have got more people following Wigan. As said countless times I don’t think the advertisements are that effective, but it was good to see near McDonalds we have a big billboard containing the offers for the games over Christmas. I just think schools around Wigan, Ashton, Leigh, St Helens should all get free tickets and fill the South stand. Be good for the club to maybe offer a chance for kids to go to the games without their mums and dads, maybe by getting trips with schools with their teachers. Not all parents want to shell out money to take their kids to games.
I’m really not being argumentative here, but why is it that the ‘casual’ or ‘walk up’ fan should always be the one who gets a cheap deal, when the season ticket holders don’t?
Ok, S/T’s are cheap enough, we know that. But it just rankles that you get the deals where it’s ‘take a friend for a fiver’ when you know that your ticket has cost you more. It’s like you’re being punished for having a season ticket sometimes!
I think it’s about time the S/T holders were given something as a thank you gesture. Like now, coming up to Christmas. If they’d just issue every S/T holder something like a £10 voucher for the shop, it would be a gesture well received. And besides, most would buy something that necessitates extra money.
We WERE told a couple of seasons ago that we’d get something.
The marketing team need to promote to the right people. You see posters inside the concourses every game advertising upcoming games. Nearly everybody inside the ground already has a season ticket or is already going to these games. Its almost a waste putting them in there.
Also, why not shut the top of the south stand? Just the top 10 rows for example. It would bring people closer giving a better chance of atmosphere and make it look busier.
The club also needs to loosen its grip on fans being turned away at the ticket office when they are first time buyers. Even if it mean a few opposition fans in our end it isn’t really a big deal. I had Liverpool fans behind me on Wednesday who didn’t offend anyone when they scored or throughout the game.
We should be averaging 20k in this league but if locals would rather follow a successful random team from their pub its not easy to take their money. Location means nothing to them, its all about success.
In particular the fact that Latics are very defensive in the way the ticket office operates this ‘database’ scheme, in pretty much the same way clubs like United and Liverpool have a members database which you have to be on to even apply for tickets.
The difference being we don’t fill our ground, and the system we have must put a lot of people off, or at least make things more difficult than they should be. I’d suggest they scrap this system and get some stewards that are half decent. By that, I mean who are professional and organised. Not a bunch of Liverpool and Everton fans who turn a blind eye when their fans walk in the ground blatantly wearing their teams colours. (as the other night)
Make it blatantly clear on the T’s and C’s on the ticket that the stands are HOME stands, and anybody found openly supporting the visiting team in those areas, is likely to be ejected. I actually think the system is a ‘hangover’ from our spat with GMP.
As for other promotion in the town, I heard the details of the Christmas lights switch on yesterday. Some no mark girl who auditioned for X factor, Luke Marsden, that t*t who was on Big Brother (Milking it, isn’t he?), plus, and I quote “…players from Wigan Warriors”. Not a mention of Latics.
I wish the club would have a mad spell of ‘roadshows’ right in the centre of Market Square. Shove the club down the necks of people who normally ignore or even mock us. Shove two very big fingers up at them. Get the mascot there, facepaints and free posters for the kiddies, that kind of thing. The type of event that the rugby excell at.
Some good points there, 1932.

It doesn’t suprise. Walk 5 minutes away from the stadium and there’s so little promotion. If the club are not going to use opportunities like the lights switch on to their advantage then what are they doing? I understand its not easy, with the majority of Wiganer’s already following a bigger team you need more than just a billboard outside Tesco or a poster on the side of a bus. However a public event like you mentioned is an opportunity to get in peoples faces & promote where we are. Were are Premier League club. We couldn’t be any higher domestically. Its regarded as the best in the world. Even if they promote the opposition were up against more than ourselves. Come and see Drogba & Lampard etc in YOUR town for just £25, for example.
Also, we have 5 or more universities less than an hour away, full of students living in halls, from all over the country with nothing to do on weekends. Take all the upcoming game posters out the concourse and get them into local colleges & universities. Offer them promotions to come and see live premier league football for unbeatable prices, something most students wont be able to afford with United, City or Liverpool.
Bang on Vat, the club need to ram it down peoples throats that if they don’t to the game, they’re missing out on the latest craze. A few posters about at the moment for the offer on the next 4 games which is good, hope they follow that up with the radio, papers, leaflet drops and free tickets to schools etc, maybe a tv advert (I know they cost) people in the granada area who haven’t thought of coming might just be amazed at the value.
As previous posts have said, a few wins would work wonders too.
I have been shot down for this before but will say it again the reason for the slump in crowds is that the neutral fan who decides that he fancies watching the tics against one of the big clubs as to be on the database system.
That is costing the club a few fans in my opinion adding to the problem is taking children I stated a couple of years ago that it cost me £20 for a eight year old son who came with me for one match
The fact that many local establishments show live Premier League matches – including Latics – during home games doesn’t help either.
Good point Ibelieve a pub in the springfield area of Wigan was offering a free pint and free grub for the televised match on Wednesday night (Even though it wasn’t on telly )

That’s a good shout regarding the students. Even if it’s a fiver a ticket and one comes along, it’s a fiver more than they would have received without the promotion.
I was speaking to the marketing manager from a football club a few years ago (and for the life of me I can’t remember which club it was) who marketed their club by asking people to choose them as their ‘second team’. Why not do that with students? The bug might catch, especially with the Scottish, Irish, Welsh and mainland European students who have no geographical affiliation to another English club.

what about putting transport on from uni etc or colleges.
