And Ribery has had just about the worst game I’ve ever seen a professional footballer play. And I watched Wayne Entwistle for a full season.
Yes, it does annoy me as it takes all the width from the game – its mainly a defensive measure to stop teams hitting you on the break. Everyone’s doing it, so it cancels everyone out and makes the games boring.
I think if you get good attacking full backs it can still be attacking, a bit like the old 5-3-2 with wing backs, but not many teams I have seen in this world cup seem to have full backs who are willing and/or able to do it.
I’m hoping Johnson and Cole prove me wrong tonight.

Think Ribery was playing in the centre just behind Anelka? Hardly got any supply. French manager has aweful tactics, serves him right for not taking Benzema and the french defence is woeful Gallas is past it!! No wonder Wenger is after that new centre back!
To be fair, the way he was playing, I wouldn’t have bothered supplying him either – played most of second half on the left, which as a right footer, didn’t suit, and lost it every time. His dead ball delivery was truly appalling too.
He used to be a good player – sums up the French performance really.
