The fly on the wall documentary about our deluded Scouse neighbours.
In a recent episode it showed footage of the new manager speaking to the players, seemingly styled on him being a shankly/paisley lovechild. Anyway, at one point he holds up 3 envelopes, it’s early in his tenure, the day before the first league game I think, and he’s stood there with 3 envelopes and he tells the players that he knows that 3 people will let him down this season, he knows already and he’s written their names down and put them in the envelope. It was cringeworthy, even more so when you find out that Alex Ferguson did the same thing 20 years ago, so it’s not even original, Nevermind clever.
The players looked unimpressed, he came across like a boring david brent, and it left me with the following thoughts:
Was this programme mentioned at the interview stage, and did Bobby turn the job down in part, because he didn’t want to be a reality tv star aswell as try to drag a once great club out of the shit.
Did Rodgers take the job because that appealed to him?
Did they hire Rodgers because they saw that he would be a puppet as far as making him do anything they want, whilst pandering to the deluded fans by pretending to love the club as much as born and bred red scousers?
Stage managed and dull and certainly not ‘fly on the wall’.No engaging characters and i have only watched one episode and a very small bit of the last one. These are people with lives so far removed from the ordinary football supporter that you cannot empathise or identify with any of them.Add to the fact that Rogers is hardly the most flambouyant man in the world-Brian Clough he aint!
Indeed the bit of the last episode was probably the best i have seen-some scouse playwright reciting a poem about being a true football supporter.
