13 August 2013 at 6:33 pm #119260but the differance between 1949 and todays greedy corrupt state is cost of living then was alot cheaper and affordable than what we live with today
13 August 2013 at 7:40 pm #119265One other big difference was that there were jobs available for all – including disabled at places like Remploy.
The public sector could also soak up jobs, making sure people worked rather than being on benefits. The low benefit rates were set at subsistence rate to reflect that ideology.
Now we have the situation of far fewer jobs, and instead of creating jobs in the public sector which would at least drag some tax revenue in, as well as getting the young into a work ethic, recent Governments have failed to see that you can’t run a country on business lines, and that forcing people to work longer for their pensions means that there is a log-jam of jobs for the young.
Which means you end up in a spiral of the benefits culture, which didn’t exist in 1949.
13 August 2013 at 9:44 pm #119272One thing it showed in that programme was if you had no contributions to the state you got nowt zilch not a penny
13 August 2013 at 10:01 pm #119273one of the worst things about benefits i remeber seeing was a pensioner (millionaire)
getting winter fuel payments
when asked how he would spend it he replied laughing ill spend it playing golf
benefits should only be for the real hard up not those that have
benefits system needs to be scrapped and thought out again
another point that bugs me even more when a mp retires they get the same income untill they die as they got for being in parliament
why like everyone else cant they live of a state pension
has for the royals them parasites piss me off goods style13 August 2013 at 11:16 pm #119276One thing it showed in that programme was if you had no contributions to the state you got nowt zilch not a pennyThat’s not actually correct. There was Supplementary Benefit which was non-contributory means-tested.

Most people would criticise the red tape in government, but when removed it still causes problems. I suspect once the facts were known then it would be easier to make a decision.
