age clouds judgement but my memory of noel ward was he was a top player but he was in his first season as a forth division defender more or less, and his injury prevented him becoming the top player i think he may have.
moving on we signed andy holden from chester i think and he was a cracking centre half – he was sold on to oldham as i remember who were a top div 2 team at the time, but again i think injury stopped him going further.
de zeeuw was indeed a top player for us but i think paul beesley and steve walsh had bigger careers than de zeeuw, its close for me but i think steve walsh just gets the nod over de zeeuw.
edit
sorry totally forgot about atherton and again he had a massive career post latics most of it top flight but i’ll stick with walshy.
erm what about colin methven,ok he never went on to bigger and better things but he was a man mountain for us,when we beat blackpool 1-0 in the cup he was awsome

colin methven is a good shout, great stopper and an interesting fellow – when we signed him he was a working pit man and part time player for east fife.
the blackpool game was a 1-1 draw though, he was immense that day and got the equaliser off his knee, think we beat them 2-0 in the replay at springfield.
We’ve had some cracking centre halves in my years of watching Latics but the best I’ve seen is Peter Atherton by a country mile for me – absolute class.
His form, & that of our keeper at the time Phil Hughes, kept Latics in the old 3rd div in one particular season (possibly 89-90)
Peter Atherton exuded class. We’ve had some good ones over the years, but Atherton’s head and shoulders clear for me.
peter atherton played for the latics old boys XI against ashton athletic in the emma hoolin charity match and looked as good and as fit as he was 20 years ago, somethings never change.
sorry one thing does – he scored a cracker of a goal that night 35 yard thunderbolt, he never did that in his career ;)

I’m sure I saw him blast a 30 yarder in at Bramhall Lane.
