Unlike the RL game however, which was played on a mild September Sunday involving two teams that are just over an hour’s drive apart, the football match against Arsenal was on a bitterly cold Tuesday night where everyone expected Latics to get thumped, and the couple of hundred away fans that came to the game had to travel 180 miles to get there.
Couple of hundred? I wouldn’t like to put a number on it myself but there were far more than that there that night. Be interested to know how many did make that trip cause it’s up there with my all time greats :D
So, the reason why 10,000 Wiganers chose to not attend the (then) biggest match in their history was “it was a bit cold”. That is almost as pathetic excuse as “it was past their bedtime”.
Still, its good to see that the missing 10,000 found their hats & gloves in time to attend the game against Liverpool a month later (when it was also cold).
As I said before, big rugby matches are nothing new in the town of Wigan, and the fans are a bit blase about them – that is why crowds for these are lower.
You’re either deliberately misreading my post because I’ve backed you into a corner, or you are more unintelligent that I give you credit for.
Mutty Attendance: 12,181. Less than 50% full. Disgraceful.
Let the excuses flow……
Mutty (separate post) Hmm. No real explanation there other than a half-ar$ed swipe towards the rugby.
NEXT!
Standishwalker For the same reason that Wigan RL got 12,117 (reported as 9,987 in the media) for their play-off game against Leeds last year: the game was not included in the cost of their season ticket.
Mutty (without any reference to rugby, because attending a rugby semi final is hardly a novelty occasion)

You can’t expect us not to throw in a RL comparison when you’re coming on here as a scorning RL supporter.

Nope. That’s just the bit you’ve chosen to pick out – which anyone with a modicum of intelligence can see is clearly me tossing the ‘what’s your excuse for such a poor turnout’ hand grenade back at you, but let me explain that bit to you again:
Latics v Arsenal ./ Wigan v Leeds
Midweek game / Weekend game
Cold January night / Mild September night
Fans travel 180 miles / Fans travel 60 miles
Expectations: Very Low / Expectations: Med/High
Attendance 12k / Attendance 12k
So, I’ll be more direct – what’s your excuse for such a poor turnout?
And why do you think the game against Arsenal was so poorly attended?
‘As I said before, big rugby matches are nothing new in the town of Wigan, and the fans are a bit blase about them – that is why crowds for these are lower.’
So, are you saying Wigan RL supporters are fickle? Surely not?
Maybe that what it is. Semi-finals against Arsenal are ten-a-penny. That’s why everyone stayed away.
Bitter and twisted scumbags who cant get over they are 2nd fiddle in our ground, all we hear is Whelan this whelan that, champinship football next year, well klumps we just keep goin on and we know it does all your heads in, all your preston bolton codheads outer borough rubgy fans that hate the mighty Tics, why did Sir Dave WHELAN SELL YOU KLUMPS please tell me. :angry-soapbox:
I’d say so, around 2000 maybe? would be my estimate. Yeah the way in which we did it also added to the occasion. Get an idea here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXc3VUOsWQI
Still remember the coach ride in and a certain song sang to the locals. I won’t go into that though
I wasn’t too fussed which really as I wasn’t trying to point score. Just pointing out you can’t compare the first major final in a clubs history to a semi final.
If I had my way Id be queing 4 times a year for final tickets.

seems that the glory hunters have deserted the chubbies tneet there aint 300 at Hull
I am listening on the radio so I can’t see the away support but I am sure it is more than 200. Sounds much more than that on the radio.
I am not shocked we havn’t taken many though, the week after another away game… friday night… on sky… in hull… the week before a semi-final. Most people will have chosen the semi-final over this game.
Yeah, but be fair. Hull is the opposite side of the country, isn’t it? It’s a long long way when you’re used to games at St Helens, Warrington and Salford. Thank God that trip to Wrexham has now gone, but the Sat Nav will now have to be programmed with Widnes.
