I suppose you have to be of a certain age to be infected with this abject hatred of Bolton Wanderers.

In truth Wigan Athletic has never had a long-standing rivalry with any football club. We had enemies back in our non-league days who were for the most part left behind in 1978. Locking horns with Bolton only started in the early to mid-eighties. Granted this escalated for the next decade or so, plenty of time I suppose for it to develop into the vitriol now being shown by some on here. For me – being of a certain age – the loathing is superficial so I’d like to think I can look at Bolton’s plight in less passionate way.

Latics may be unique in the football world in that our longest protracted rivalry has been with a club playing a different sport. And we’ve good reason to consider them to be the greater thorn in our side. Whatever resentment Bolton may have thrown our way it does not compare with the long-established put-downs, patronising, and lack of empathy shown towards us by both rugby fans themselves and the club itself, especially when we ourselves were struggling to survive.

There may well be a good amount of satisfaction had in seeing Bolton struggle and much resentment that they have escaped expulsion but we as a small-town football club surrounded by big city teams need to be careful what we wish for. All clubs need a rival and preferably one that we can actually play now and again. Without that football is less appealing and the requirement to despise someone can no longer be satisfied.

Who knows how long our current owners will stick around until the interest wanes? It may be our turn someday.

Not so. When the EFL support cheating then I am outraged. I was outraged with Leicester in the past who won a promotion to the greed league. I was similarly outraged with blue eyed boys Pompey who went into admin and ripped off people for Millions. Over and over again this has happened and sometimes clubs have bounced back then they’re sinking in Greed League money but past debts are still not payed back because it had been written off by the club going into admin.

Very well put Sammy, I must be a similar age and I totally agree.

Very well said sammy. I have been echoing something similar either on here &/or Facebook, especially your last paragraph.

Ain’t because its Bolton stu it’s because its grossly unfair what they have done and got away with and the bias seemingly showed to them while Bury have been killed off. I’ve said all along my beef is with the EFL.

Bury’s owner has not played along, or provided anything.
And don’t give me “a credible bid was made 5 minutes before the deadline”.
Where was it a month ago?

          #180825

GL has pointed out the differences several times

So he has but the cheats have got away with murder however how many times GL has pointed out the difference.
Robbed suppliers, denied their staff, cancelled games, exploited other clubs, run rings around the EFL.
They have done so much harm to the game and have been abley assisted by their friends at the EFL.

Firstly he provided nothing because the EFL didn’t stick to their own rules and let him get away with it for nine months.

Secondly the new bid only came in late because sporting risk were the EFL preffered bidder and were set to buy the club until 90 mins before the deadline at 5pm.

As soon as SR pulled out a new bid came in and Dale the crook informed the EFL and asked them to open talks.

BOTH Bolton and Bury missed the deadline Bolton got a 14 day extension Bury got expelled.

How anyone cannot blame the EFL for not abiding by their own rules is staggering.

Pretty much what Leicester did to their creditors when they went into administration a few years back. Then they got new billionaire owners, won the league and have £millions coming in every year.

Did they settle those historical debts to small businesses?

Always been different rules for the bigger clubs mutt take Utd and the astronomical debt the Glazers heaped on them. Obviously they can sustain it with turnover etc but it’s become a model for a lot of clubs who cannot. Changes have to be made after this especially in the lower leagues.

As Garswood said “for now”, never a true word spoken. Unless the consortium who have bailed out Bolton this time are filthy stinking senseless rich then this will 100% happen again to them.

The thing is, will the fans come flooding back at £35 a pop ?. How much revenue have they got coming in from season ticket money? Zero, corporate and sponsors ?, nil, the League itself ? Pennies.
And how much have the consortium paid Anderson to take control ?. I hope they’ve deep pockets with unwanted cash to boot otherwise it might be quicker tieing it in a few bin bags and lob it in the blue lagoon over winter hill.

Bollocks to the cheating knobs. Hopefully the points deduction will come and see them in the 4th division.
But you can just see the headlines in a couple of years. BWFC the club they couldn’t kill. FFS!
