griff you as well as all latics fans know that whelan has never been shy in stating he will give his manager this or i will spend that, his outrageous statements kept many journalists pencils sharp for ages,it is only in the last couple of years that he has changed his spots and urged caution in how both us and every other football club is run,
now every person with a modicum of finacial understanding would agree with this and understand the reasoning, the only problem is as i said before whelan and his comments built peoples hopes and aspirations with alot of false hoo-hah and the reality becomes a disappointment to many
Bobby must rate this guy pretty highly and he does seem to have a pretty good strike rate.
Strange that United were very keen on him earlier this year and now appear to have lost interest.
We’ve probably done a deal with United to sell him on to them if he proves to be a hit in the Premier League.
I don’t mind us being a feeder club for the big boys if it means we get to see exciting young talent playing for us. Plus any profit we make keeps our little club afloat.

Of course, but I repeat that the famour warchest was only mentioned in Jewell’s first season. He has never banged on since then about spending pots of money so I don’t see that he has any profligate spending plan statements to defend. And as you say, his financial strategy at the moment requires no explanation to those who are not hard of thinking so why should he have to explain it?
That said, I have seen many quotes from him over recent years where he has clearly stated that he is looking to reduce debt as his top priority which, by definition, precludes over the top spending, you would think. Therefore, there seems to be very little evidence of him promising to splash the cash.
whelan is a born and bred salesman and he long ago identified as in all his other business’s, profit to fund other activities is a fundemental need , it is a major part of our income and one of the main factors of our continued survival, buying and developing sows ears and turning them into silk purses is core to that philosophy
7 million is alot to gamble and to increase the value on him the player has to be exceptional, i dont doubt that whelan would take the gamble if he felt the returns were there, but why take that chance when there are cheaper options,i seem to remember paying 3 mill or so for rodelegga after being asked to pay much more for someone else but refusing to do so, now that seems to have proved a good deal.
this is the way we have to run wigan athletic,my only problem is,whelan should have made a statement to the public from day one confirming this and not chest beating and promising war chests and everybody could accept this.
I detect a sense of positivity in this thread
Well, I am going to go against the grain here and say that £7.5M for 1 player for a club of our size is too much money to spend. The whole point of looking for talent is to try and find talent at the £1M to £4M scale to sell on as a profit….that keeps the club in the prem and that also attracts more fans to watch the club…..building a solid foundation.
….what if this guy is a flop and becomes another Koumas/Kapo?? £7.5M wasted!
