I have DEFINITELY noticed a big swing in people who seem to have lost patience and faith in our manager, and that includes some people from on here, and other Latics sites, who have defended him to the hilt. I think a lot had their minds changed on Saturday. I spoke to some Latics ‘faces’ and they said “You can’t defend that, at all”. They were right.

It does remain to be seen if the meetings with the site representatives continue, or if our manager becomes ‘unavailable’.

I honestly believe that a defeat on Saturday will actually make a lot of peoples minds up once and for all. The final whistle won’t be pretty…..it’ll be a damn shame, actually.

perhaps i should rephrase it then-the pro martinez lobby on here have always cried down any one who dares to say anything about him, they label his detractors as non supporters, hysterical no nothings or jcl’s,they also use a high handed aloof superior tone to put down the ones among us who despite claims, ARE wigan athletic fans ,but not martinez supporters, and as i said before there are more and more who are beginning to call into question team martinez.

There you go again, hysterical, paranoid and totally over the top reaction. It’s rag week every day with you, isn’t it? ;)

Admittedly, some of the pro-Martinez faction are quite fanatical but you can hardly claim that those on your side of the fence have the monoploy on calm and reasoned debate.[/quote]

It would be dumb to change him now, in my opinon that should have been done 12 games back. However, that was my opinion, not Uncle Dave’s.

Should we stay up, it will be because of other teams capitulations, not our mesmerising way of play.

I personally would like to see Martinez moved on at the end of the season, maybe stay at the club in a coaching role, but an experienced, respected manager is what is required.

Roll on saturday, when i truly believe Bobby will be overseeing not only 90 minutes of wigan v burnley, but his entire credibility and potential for becoming one of the games highly rated managers.

Saturday will be the test, no speculation or pontification on here will change the outcome of it, however i fear for the backlash should we lose.

We have to win on Saturday, simple as….we can’t be getting beaten at home by utter shoite like Burnley, they are simply woeful. That said, providing we score the first goal, I think we’ll win comfortably, if we concede first it will become very tricky as it will give them something to hold on to.

Not sure why you quoted me to say what you said, but no matter.

IMO, an experienced, respected manager will want more money to earn and spend than he is likely to be granted.

I’ve said elsewhere that we need to win on Saturday and the same applies to the Portsmouth and Hull games. Do that and the table will look after itself and we will deservedly survive – FACT!

Lose 1 or more of those games and things might not look so rosy. And again, deservedly so.

Yep, that’s right. First question they’ll ask is about transfer funds.

Second question they’ll ask is which is the quickest way back to the M6.

              First reply button i pressed.

With regard to a better manager wanting more money, thats part and parcel of the premier league.

We could get one of the lads out of the beech tree to do it ofr 4 quid a week, but where will that get us? If we want to be in one of the biggest leagues in the world, we need to start having an administraion and staff competent to cope in this league.

Do you mean we need to start acting and THINKING bigger? I feel the same. No good playing the “lickle wigan…happy to be here” tune any more. Since we got up, Reading have been and gone….and Sheff Utd, etc. We are still here….so perhaps it’s time to push on. We are still here due to merit. (and goal difference)

But ARE we? If we stick with Martinez, I’d give him until October/November. If we are no better…..get rid.

Yep, you’ve sort of agreed with me. You have to assume that Whelan will offer limited funds to any new manager – as we suspect we have with Martinez – who will therefore, probably, decline.

                  Griff,

Looking back to last summer, it was hardly a case of us being ‘inundated’ with applicants, as far as I’m aware.

If I remember rightly, Whelan hinted at wanting Jewell back, before publicly revealing he wanted, and then going all out for Martinez, which instigated a protracted wrangle for compensation with Swansea. This coming soon after he had criticized foreign managers, and declared we’d never have one!

It wasn’t even a case of there being rumours of, say, Alan Curbishley being interested in the job, or other ‘higher profile’ managers.

Probably because people in the game with the experience, knew, or at least suspected that they’d have severe limitations, in the job. So, probably we got the only bloke who would take the job. Perhaps HIS judgement was clouded by his past links, when he took the job on?

We were all frightened that he’d be doing the job with his hands behind his back, and that has been the case. And when it came out that we couldn’t afford the 4 million or so on Scot McDonald, or rather, wouldn’t spend it, it all but confirmed it. (Is he doing anything at Boro?)

Now, we’ve got Moreno on loan, and apparently if we want him, we can have him for 6 million. (Jury’s out on him, yet, I know) I wouldn’t hold my breath in hope of us signing him.

I agree, VAT. So, what’s the answer?

I think we are “stuck” with Martinez for a good while yet, even if we get relegated, which is partly why I don’t waste my energy campaigning to get him out.

The main reason being that I like what he is trying to do, even though hewe may not be very good at it yet.

                    I agree with you, Griff.

I don’t actually think there IS an answer, or an alternative at this moment in time. I’ve openly changed my opinion a few times this season ‘Stick by him’, then ‘he’s not up to it’, etc. Where am I now? Same as always. I want him to do well, but……results tell the story.

And I look at it logically. Unless Whelan suddenly decided to a different approach,(more funds and investment) or we are actually bought out by somebody with money to throw at new signings, we will NOT attract a ‘higher profile’, and experienced Premiership manager.

The nearest to it we could probably get at this time, WOULD be to get Paul Jewell back. But do you go back? Even with Jewell, if he came back, he might say the team needs “major surgery”, and then be told that there is no money to change things. Is the job a poisoned chalice? I think so, at this time. I also have the gut feeling that Whelan will be handing the reigns over within the next year. Why do I think that? I don’t know. Just a feeling. Things actually may get a LOT worse before they get better. He might STILL own the club, but leave running it to someone else, whilst he is sunning it in Barbados. Who? I’m not even going there……………….oh go on then, “an experienced sports administrator”. Enough said.

We all know why Steve Bruce left. He was sick of losing his best players, and being heavily restricted financially. He knew he would always be rebuilding and losing players. I suppose the truth will never come out about that, but I’d bet that was the situation. I’d have left as well, in his position.

All in all, I can’t wait for May, whatever happens. At least we’ll know a lot more then.

We’ll see what Martinez really thinks at the end of the season.

Right now he appears to be giving everyone a pat on the back because he knows some players will spit their dummy out if he critizises them.

Against Villa I believe we let slip a nailed on point, never looked dangerous, and gave away silly goals.

That being said, everyone starts from a clean sheet on Saturday.
