They take on some really risky passes at times though. It almost seems unbelievable that they would do this constantly without some remit from Martinez. I’ve said it before that, in my opinion, I think they are told to pass it out at all costs, as if you keep playing this way your confidence will grow on the ball and we can live with the odd mistake if it is for the benefit of every player being comfortable on the ball.

I’d love to be able to ask him that question, as to how much he encourages the team to pass at all costs. I see benefits in this strategy over a season, it’s just high risk on games upon which so much rests.

When you sign Celtic’s captain, and their fans come on our sites laughing about it and thanking us for doing so, it doesn’t bode well.

He’s obviously got big problems with his hips, having previously had operations on them. We keep on with the comments of “he wasn’t fit” and such likes after he’s cocked up….will he EVER be fit?

I agree with you, MIGHTY AFF, and said myself last night that this fella will be our captain in the Championship. Not through any show of blind faith from him, or towards him by the club, but simply because he is so shite, nobody else will want him.

I hope he never plays for us again.

What the hell was he doing for that second goal?

I hope you never post on here again.

He does have passion for sure, and he definitely cares about the result of the match. He is just past his best. I thought he was great last year and the year before, but its time he went to the glue factory.

Suicidal defending, for an experienced player it’s inexplicable really. I heard he is going to have retire at end of season due to a long standing hip injury, not sure how true that is.

We can all but pray ! :cheer:
Having been at work all day having time to reflect and talk to others about it i realised that if things go our way on Sunday and we can hold Arsenal to scoring just the one goal then we are pretty much still in the same position. In an ideal world by the time we play Villa, They will be safe, Newcastle and Norwich will have been beaten and 25,000 fans will do a West Ham, I honestly believe that the atmosphere the crowd against West Ham created 2 seasons ago played a huge part in us staying up. If we are still in with a shout i will be at the ticket office getting my Villa tickets on Monday morning. Call me what you like but that’s how i roll.

The problem isn’t the passing game. The problems are not putting chances away and making silly mistakes at the back.

Some of the silly mistakes that happen come from the over exaggerated passing at the back though. Caldwell and Figs in the last three games. I like the way we play with the qualification that we overpass it for passing sake sometimes.

In the second half last night, especially when Nathan Dyer came on, it was clear that they were pressing us with great effect and that in some instances passing across our box would be almost suicidal but we still did.

I’ve said before it’s a fine line because some of the passing at the back has created space that has led to great goals but there has to be some common sense as regards when to push your luck and when to realise its best to not take very risky passes on.
I’ve just put it on another thread, players need common sense when making a decision whether to pass it in a dangerous position or just clear it, and unfortunately one or two of our players seem to lack that common sense at times.

I’m pretty damn sure Martinez’s coaching staff don’t instruct the players to pass it square – across goal and when a player is bearing down on them.
agree standish, sometimes it is best to clear your lines but players further up the pitch need to find space and make themselves available for said hoof or have a target man to aim for who will hold the ball up, hesky did this very well

I think Caldwell set the tone within a minute of the KO. I forgot who was on the ball for them, but Caldwell came roaring out of defence at 100 mile an hour only to be wrong footed and the player just slipped past him. He knows that he is not at his best and is trying to compensate by rushing at anything that moves. As someone said, he put a great ball through for macca’s goal, but fans will only remember his stray pass for their goal.
It was also his header that their keeper pushed over the bar late on.

I personally wouldn’t have Caldwell in the starting 11 and would have played Golobart on Tuesday, however, Caldwell has contributed to us staying in this division the past couple of years so lets not hang him out to dry, hey boys.
