All piss and tears on your forum Mutty saying he’s come back looking great pre season. You can’t blame the lad wanting to coming back to a club playing at a higher level and who he has won major honours with in recent times.

There’s a big difference to someone who was a premier league player 12 months ago looking good in half a pre-season game against non-league or 4th tier opposition, and the performances that he put in last season, which were woeful.

He’s asked for a transfer and Wigan have paid the fee Sunderland expected, so we have offloaded (IMHO) a high earning, low performing player and got a fee for him.

Now, do you fancy Lee Cattermole back…. :-)

No need for sour grapes Mutty, the majority of Sunderland fans don’t have your views, and were looking forward to the coming season with Callum.
Yes, you have offloaded him and will be saving a bit in wages, but you know full well your squad has been severely weakened by the sale of Callum McManaman.

I think the view is hot and cold on McManaman, mutty, and I can see why.
On his day (Cup Final, Everton 2013 as examples) he was unstoppable. But at the end of his time with us he was moody.
But remember we are talking about a person. A person with feelings, not just a robot.
He believed he was talented; his Cup Final performance showed that. But Rosler was a poor man manager, and was a complete tinker man. How many games, compared for example to Cookie, did he keep the same team? Players became disenchanted, Callum had been a PL player, and was now reduced to bit parts by a manager who in hindsight (and it’s a great thing) didn’t know Madras from his Elba. At the same time his agent is nibbling away in his ear.
The hints are there is his interview.
He has talent if managed correctly. He has an ego, certainly, but so do Ronaldo, Messi, Rooney et al (I’m not saying he’s that standard of course but the principle applies). It’s what makes them good players. We don’t want shrinking violets.
Managed correctly, in a supportive environment, he could be a great asset.
I think he’s learned. Doesn’t he say that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
I hope, hope, he has matured and could be a great asset for us.

No sour grapes here Horc – just someone supportive of the new owner’s approach. In case you weren’t aware, just before pre-season, all bar one of the senior squad indicated that they would like to leave the club. The response from the owners was that they could leave as long as two conditions were met:

          1. Any buying club met Sunderland’s valuation of the player.
          2. There would be no pay-off and no part-subsidising of wages.

Players have subsequently left. Steele & Rodwell have gone, Asoro & Khazri have been sold, Kone is on his way, Oviedo will be leaving soon, and McManaman has now gone. I fully expect more to leave over the next two weeks, but each and every one will leave on our terms. N’dong & Dilibodji have failed to return to training and the club are now not paying them, whilst still holding onto their registrations. To quote a senior source at the SOL – “The piss take party has ended”.

Every fortnight, there is a 2hr podcast with the owner, and he is refreshingly honest. He talks about finances, player movements and even the refitting of the seats! This week’s podcast discussed Macmanaman, and there was no indication he was going. That suggests that your bid has matched or exceeded the valuation Sunderland put on him, and as the first priority this season is to shift high earners who have no desire to graft in the 3rd division, then his leaving for a fee and no pay-off represents a great deal.

I wish him luck back at Wigan. Since he bailed out on you 3 years ago, he’s not exactly set the world on fire, so hopefully returning to a club where he was successful will help him and you.

Thanks for the explanation, it was thoughtful and considered unlike your previous comments which were less thoughtful, less considered and did have a waft of sour grapes.

Definitely sounds like sour grapes to me.

I wouldn’t pay him in washers, why would we pay a fee for him and only give him a one year contract?

A refreshing change Donny to have an owner that is up front – possibly too up front for some. I download it and listen in 30min chunks on my commute to/from work.

It was 5 years ago since we last saw the best of him in a Latics shirt. Most Latic fans thought that at the time £4.75 million was a good bit er business when we sold him to West Brom.

Since then I heard he hasn’t set the world alight. I’m sure most players would jump at the chance of playing at a higher level so any Championship club would have turned any players head.

I’m sitting on the fence on this one as I haven’t seen much of him since he left Wigan. The club must be thinking the same as they have only offered him a 12 month deal.
His link with the club will never be broken as he played a massive part in lifting the FA Cup, welcome home Callum and good luck for the coming season and prove the doubters and 50/50 crew like me wrong
