Wigan head for Cardiff on Saturday. One team change will be necessary as Maynard cannot play against his club, Cardiff.

The obvious replacement is Fortune, but Rosler may also have Powell fit again. McManaman stayed on the bench at Sheffield, together with Gomez and Espinoza.

Rosler may take into account the home game against Barnsley on Tuesday, when Maynard will be able to return.

Cardiff won 1-0 at Bolton in the last round. Premier League survival will be in their thoughts too.

Presumably Callum was on the bench last night as the plan is for him to start on Saturday?

    Espinoza/Gomez to start as well?

The more of the cup winning side who can start the better; they won it, they deserve it. Keeping hold of the cup as long as possible should mean more to them than the newer players

Is the game likely to be called off? New storm to hit on Friday, given rail links to Cardiff are off what are the odds?

If we do play, think he will play McManaman, Gomez and Espinoza.

Seeing as they were three who never moved a muscle on Tuesday, I wouldn’t say that would be the greatest selection shock ever.

To be useful to travelling fans, a decision to postpone the match would have to be well in advance of kick off – early in the morning or better still the day before. Judging by last night’s decisions at Manchester City and Everton, that isn’t likely.

The Met Office issued a rare red warning of high winds in the North West from 1:30pm to 9:00pm posing a risk to life and threatening structural damage. It advised people not to make unnecessary journeys.

Both clubs – and the police, presumably – thought it was safe for fans to travel in these conditions. It was only around 7:00pm when things began flying around near the stadiums that the games were called off.

By then the home and away fans would have been arriving at the grounds. Announcements that the decisions were made for the safety of the fans ring rather hollow.

Charlton’s midweek trip to Newcastle is one of my favourites for that as was our trip to Gillingham in 2003, however that one was a tad more painful as I actually made the trip.

The Charlton match was called off just before kick-off IIRC

At least you could enjoy the bright lights of Gillingham.

What is there to do in Newcastle?
