I must admit that despite what I said previously if it was just myself Braga would be my number one choice draw so I could visit Porto, it is number one on the list of those places I have always wanted to visit.

Vintage port is my ‘guilty pleasure’, I both collect and drink the odd bottle so imagine my dream Latics away at Braga followed by a visit up the Douro valley and trips round the famous ‘port caves’ in Porto itself.

Your families are going to be gutted when they find out this year’s holidays are in Motherwell, Donetsk and Minsk!

Or delighted with trips to Lisbon(estoril), Florence or Seville
Quite true. Lisbon in September would be a nice one with a Thursday to Monday stay in Cascais.
Standish you are a travelled man, estoril/cascais uded to be a popular package tour destination 20-30 years ago and I have have been there a few times, although you never see either in the popular brochures any more.

Lisbon is still one of my favourite cities, it would be a dream come true if we managed to draw them(Estoril)
I do like Lisbon but must say I actually prefer Porto – which is one of my favourite cities, although that’s probably because I’ve spent more time there than in Lisbon.

Saying that though, I stayed at this place in Cascais a few years ago. Lovely hotel.

I stayed in this very hotel last September, Thursday to Monday on a work (ahem) related trip. Very expensive though and very happy someone else was paying. Spent most of our time eating and drinking in Cascais, outside of the excursions that had been laid on for us. Beautiful part of the world, fingers crossed for Estoril :)

The don’t think I paid for it myself do you?! Also a work trip for me, but we did make sure we had quite a bit of ‘down time’!

It was April when I stayed there. Not exactly tropical weather, but warm enough.

Braga’s the strangest stadium I’ve ever been to. Not much in the town, but Porto’s only 40 mins away.

I’m wasn’t a big fan of Port but I went on a tour of Graham’s and staggered out of there a few hours later. A lovely way to spend an afternoon!

I was in the Dominican Republic in my hotel room watching us beat Arsenal 3-2, I was there with my girlfriend the sun was blazing, fantastic all inclusive hotel, white beaches everything you could want from a foreign holiday and all I wanted was to be back in Wigan.

I know what you mean. I am missing Warrington v Wigan this year.

      Proper gutted.

I wish you two would stop it. I’m now opening a bottle of port and will also no doubt soon be grabbing some cheese and biscuits. Obviously tomorrow I will forget that I opened some port and in three months when I remember I shall be pouring it down the sink!

Early last year I bought a case of Dow’s 2011 half bottles(375cl) for just that reason, they were a liitle expensive at about a tenner per bottle but 2011 is going to prove to be one of the great vintage years.

Even though these should be given another couple of years before opening because of this thread today I thought what the hell get one drunk, however I just checked on the web site where I buy them from and this same case of wine is now £270 (12 bottles)so needless to say I will make do with a glass of merlot.

Not bad going £150 increase in value in just over 12 months, down side is the newsletter from the wine merchants said buy as much 2011 vintage as you can it is a great investment, I didn’t.
